5 Reading 1. Read about Lydia s job. Would you like to do this kind of work? My name s Lydia and I have a part-time job at an ice cream stand in my neighborhood. It s a really cool place to work, and it s easy to get to from my home. Right now I m working 18 hours a week because it s summertime and I don t have school. In May and June I worked there only on the weekends, about 10 hours a week. In September, I ll probably work only 10 hours a week too. (The store is closed from October to April when it s cold outside.) On the weekends, the lines of people are endless. It seems like everybody wants ice cream. A lot of my friends come to the place, but most of the customers are strangers. (By the way, the most popular flavor is vanilla, but my favorite is chocolate.) When it s busy, my wrists get really sore. And my hands get very sticky from the ice cream and toppings like chocolate sauce. Cleaning up at the end of the night is hard work. It s also awful inside the ice cream stand when it s hot and humid. Otherwise, I like my job a lot. Everyone is my age. We re a bunch of teenagers hanging out together, listening to music and making money. (We make great tips on Friday and Saturday nights.) And we get to eat lots of ice cream too. 2. Check ( ) the things Lydia talks about. 1. the number of hours she works 2. the days of the week she works 3. the things she likes about her job 4. the things she doesn t like about her job 5. her opinion of her boss 6. the amount of money she makes Copyright 2003 by Pearson Education, Inc.
