Matt Cruse has just cut the cords that connect the balloon to the gondola, and now the balloon and its cut cords are falling into the ocean. The loose, trailing cords flap like the tentacles of a jellyfish. The word undulating describes the balloon canvas itself, which is billowing and waving because of the air currents. The author s point of view about the events in the story Aurora is being told to the readers using the perspective of first-person narration. The main character, Matt Cruse, is directly involved in the events of the story and is telling the tale first hand, therefore the events as well as the characters thoughts and actions are told from Matt Cruse s perspective. This is evident when Matt relates the crew s reaction after he is safely back on board the Aurora, Hands tousling my hair, clapping me on the back, voices saying, Well done, and me trying not to smile but smiling and laughing anyway because it felt so good to know I d brought the gondola in, saved the pilot, and impressed everyone. All these men who had known my father. They would have called him Mr. Cruse too. Apply 2-point rubric.

In the middle of the story, Cruse started to feel nervous. By the end of the story, Cruse felt very proud for safely returning to the airship, saving the pilot, and preventing the balloon from crashing. In the beginning of the story Airborn, Cruse was not afraid of the dangerous mission. The Captain said that of all the crew, he saw the least fear in Cruse. Cruse replied, Yes, sir. I have no fear of heights. He also knew that he was the lightest crew member, which meant he would be safer than the others on this mission. His bravery was rewarded by the Captain, who chose Cruse for the rescue mission. Cruse started to become nervous in the middle of the story. He was sorely worried that the balloon might catch on fire. He also worried that the metal burner frame might not hold. Cruse explained, I stared, breath stoppered in my throat, at those four bits of metal that tethered the burner frame to the gondola. They were never supposed to support the gondola s entire weight. In the end, Cruse was proud because he saved the hot air balloon pilot. Cruse said, It felt so good to know that I brought the gondola in, saved the pilot, and impressed everyone. These examples support how Cruse s feelings changed at different points in the story. Apply 4-point rubric
