21 Event ideas Here are just some possible events you could do for this activity. Be creative and feel free to adapt them or make your own! Adjectives that can be used in sentences for each event are written in parentheses at the end of each explanation. Arm wrestling: Participants pair up and arm wrestle their partner. Winners then arm wrestle each other until there is one student remaining. (strongest) Push-ups: Participants do as many push-ups as they can in 30 seconds. (strong) Speed writing: Participants write a word/sentence as many times as possible in 30 seconds. (fast) Create a character: Participants create an original character in 1 min. Students or the ALT/JTE can be judges. (bigger, smaller, cooler, more interesting, stronger, etc.) High to low: Do not explain this event to students! Instead, say it is a surprise, and have students select one representative. Students line up from tallest to shortest, and the winners are the tallest and shortest students. (tall, short) Old to young: Just like High to low, except students line up based on age. (old, young) Old to new: Participants try to select the oldest and newest from a selection of anime, manga, movies or other things (e.g. mascots) printed out and posted on the blackboard. Those who pick the oldest and newest titles get a point. See further down for some printouts of anime you can use for this event (just delete the text box with the year of release before printing) (old, new) Popularity: Participants select a print-out just like in Old to New. The class is

22 then surveyed on whether they like the anime/manga/etc. each participant selected. The participant who has the title with the most likes gets a point. Variation: have students draw pictures, then have students vote for which ones they like the best. (popular) Strike a pose: Participants strike a pose based on different adjectives given. For instance, ask students to make a cute pose, a cool pose, a boring pose, a strong pose, an interesting pose, a beautiful pose, etc. (cute, cool, boring, strong, interesting, beautiful, etc.) Make a face: Participants make a face based on different adjectives. Students judge who has the best face that matches the adjective. (funny, happy, scary) Weekend workout: Participants describe what they did on the weekend (or on the previous day). Students then judge who had the busiest weekend (busy). Cup stacking: Participants try to stack 6 cups into a pyramid as fast as possible. You can also have them take down and remake their pyramid as many times as they can in a given time limit (fast) Stand-up comedian: Participants must tell a joke or do something to make the class laugh. Students judge who is the funniest (funny) Jumping Jacks: Participants do as many jumping jacks as they can in 30 seconds. NOTE: You may want to check to see if your students/jte know what jumping jacks are. Neither of my JTEs knew, so you may have to demonstrate this if you do it. (fast) Speak fast: Participants say a tongue twister or sentence as many times as they can in 10 seconds. (fast) So you think you can dance: Just like Strike a Pose, except participants have 5-10 seconds to do a dance (various vocabulary can be used)

23 Calligraphy: Participants have 30 seconds to write the nicest calligraphy they can on the board (beautiful, big, small) The Voice: Participants say a line of dialogue using funny voices. You can do multiple rounds, with students doing the highest, lowest, and funniest voices. Consider showing pictures of anime characters for students to give a voice to. (high, low, funny, interesting, cool) Mission Impossible: Participants must think of the most difficult kanji/tongue twister/phrase for the ALT to write/say. The ALT then does his/her best to write or say the kanji/phrase. (difficult, easy)
