1 6 th Grade ELA Post-Test Study Guide Semester One TYPES OF SENTENCES Simple sentences have one independent clause (subject, predicate, complete thought). Compound sentences contain two independent clauses and use coordinating conjunctions. F For A And N Nor B But O Or Y Yet S So Complex sentences use subordinating conjunctions such as because, since, after, although, until (there are many others!) or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which. They contain one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. Run-on sentences have more than one independent clause without proper conjunctions and/or punctuation. Sentence Fragments are missing a subject, a predicate, or a complete thought. Identify the following sentences as simple, compound, or complex. 1. Bones is my favorite TV show, but I also love Criminal Minds. COMPOUND 2. The student wiped the white board that was filthy. SIMPLE 3. The trendy fashion designer released her new line on Wednesday. SIMPLE 4. Trina and Henry went to Hollywood to celebrate their anniversary. SIMPLE 5. Wicked Regina cast a spell on the entire city, so the citizens decided to rebel. COMPOUND 6. After listening to the new Adele CD, I have a new respect for her music. PERSONIFICATION PRONOUNS Subject Pronouns: used in the subject of the sentence (Exs: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, what, and who) Object Pronouns: used as the direct/indirect object of a verb or object of preposition (Exs: him, her, it, them) Personal Pronouns: associated primarily with a particular person (Exs: I, he, she, her, him) Possessive Pronouns: shows ownership (Exs: mine, hers, his, theirs, my) Demonstrative Pronouns: used to point to something specific in a sentence (Exs: this, that, these, those) Interrogative Pronouns: used in order to ask a question (Exs: what, which, who, whom, whose) Reflexive Pronouns: refer back to the subject, after the verb (Exs: myself, himself, herself, themselves) Intensive Pronouns: shows emphasis, before the verb (Ex: myself, himself, herself, themselves) Indefinite Pronouns: do not specify which noun they replace (Exs: neither, nothing, someone, everything)

4 PLOT & TYPES OF CONFLICT Identify and explain the parts of plot Exposition: beginning of the story; setting and characters are introduced 2. Rising Action: conflict is introduced 3. Climax: turning point of the story 4. Falling Action: conflict is resolved 5. Resolution: all loose ends are tied up Match the type of conflict with the correct definition. 29. Also, be familiar with the following noun types: Common vs. Proper Nouns: proper nouns are specific, common are not (Ex: man vs. Mr. John Smith) Concrete vs. Abstract Nouns: can touch concrete, but not abstract (Ex: floor, door vs. happiness, anger) Compound Noun: two nouns together to form a new noun (Ex: butterfly, cupcake, post office) Collective Noun: portrays a group (Ex: herd, flock, team) Possessive Noun: shows ownership (Ex: The pen is Joan s.)
