1 Form 7 Teacher Halyna Bakhurynska Theme: A visit to the theatre. Aims: - To practise speaking, reading and listening skills; - To develop the ability to distinguish the desired information while reading and listening; - To develop the ability to speak logically and consistently on the basis of the given speech situation; - To practise new vocabulary related to names of the elements of the theatre interior; - To practise work in pairs / groups; - To practise matching; - To practise making dialogues; - To role-play dialogues; - To practise reciting poems; - To enrich students knowledge about one of the world s greatest poet and playwright W. Shakespeare; - To educate students respect to other people, their culture. Expected results. At the end of the lesson my students can: - Name the elements of the theatre interior; - Use the rules of language etiquette; - Find out about the possibility of buying theatre tickets online; - Use the phrases from natural conversational contest; - Enrich their knowledge about W. Shakespeare and show the acting skills and creativity; - Improve their speaking skills on the basis of the given speech situation. Equipment: multimedia equipment, additional material, a presentation, handouts, costumes, musical accompaniment. Plan of the lesson I. Greetings. Warm-up. Video-question: What is theatre?. We ll start with our conversational warm-up. - What is theatre? - Have you ever been to the theatre? - Are there any theatres in our city? - What kinds of theatres are there in Ternopil? - How often do you go to the theatre? (once a month / year; not very often) - When were you in the theatre last time? (in December) - What play did you see? (I saw ) - Did you like it? (Yes, the performing was excellent / Not very much) - Do you like going to the theatre? (Yes, I do. I really like it) - Have you ever been to the theatre in another city or country? - Do you go to the theatre with your family or friends? - Have you ever bought theatre tickets online? (Well, I can give you some information about it) Try to use synchronous translation or translate what I m saying about. Firstly, you have to know what play you are going to see. Then, go to the theatre site and choose the name of the play, the date and time of the performance. Choose the number of tickets and kind of tickets.

2 They can be for children or adults. After that you can pay by card. Finally, you ll get a letter of confirmation and your e-tickets. - Where do you usually buy tickets to the theatre? (in the box office / before the play / our teacher buys them) II. Main part. 1. Checking homework. To begin with we ll have a running review of previously learned material. Pronunciation drill. At first, I recommend you to refresh the pronunciation of the vocabulary. Repeat after me. (на слайді 12 слів інтер єр) Drill in chorus. Look at the photos and name the elements of the interior of the theatre. (слайди: назвати елементи інтер єру) Individual practice. Semantizing of the vocabulary. Now I d like to test your understanding of the vocabulary. Match the words with the definitions and read them aloud. Write your name and surname at the top of your paper. (музичний фон) Mind your own task. 1. Stalls best seats on the ground floor 2. Stage is the platform on which the actors perform 3. Curtains the solid curtain that covers the stage before the show 4. Orchestra pit place where live music played at the theatre 5. Box office place where you can buy tickets 6. Foyer it is found at the entrance of the theatre 7. Balcony seating on a level above the stalls 8. Dress circle seats the front rows, one level up 9. Box room of your own from which to watch the performance Reading. You ve got a story of one Englishman about his experience of going to the theatre. But, as you see, some words in the story are missed. So, your task is to complete the text with the words given below. Seat, the theatre, programme, cheaply, tickets, stage, experience, actors, audience. They stand on stage in front of an audience of hundreds, and look so calm and confident. Then read the text yourselves and translate it. 3. Relaxation. Song-break. 4. Speaking. Work in groups. Using the new words in natural conversational context. The next task is to make up the dialogues and dramatize them. As you ve told me at the beginning of the lesson, you usually go to the theatre with your friends or parents. So, you talk with them about your visit. Let s do some activities in groups. Every group is going to have a number of sentences. Your task is to make the dialogue. Then try to imagine that you are in the theatre and improvise the dialogue. (музичний фон) Dialogue 1 Hi, Taras! Hello, Katia! How about going to the theatre on Sunday? Sounds great! What play would you like to see? Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Is there any chance of getting tickets at the box-office? Don t worry about it. I have already bought them online. Ok. Where do you want to meet? Why don t we meet in the foyer? Fine. What time? At 5:30. Great! Sunday, at 5:30. See you! Bye. Dialogue 2 Hi, Vika! Hello! This is a small world! How are you? Fine. Thanks. How are you? Not bad. Thanks. Where do you have a seat? In the stalls, row C. And where is your seat? In the box, close to the stage. So, you don t have to use opera glasses. That s right.

I ve been to the Drama Theatre. I saw a fantastic play. Where were your seat? In the dress circle. The best seats in the theatre are there. Being one level up gives you the chance to have a nice view on the stage. Did you like the actors and actresses? Sure. They got many curtain calls. Have you got the program with you? I d like to have a look. Oh, yes. Here you are. I advise you to see the play. I ll try. Bye! See you later. 5. Elements of performing. This is only one chance for you to change this situation. Capulet: OK. We agree. We re going to arrange a masked ball to celebrate. There will be a lot of people. (Усі йдуть) Romeo: Oh, what can I do? I know that this is dangerous, but soon my lovely Juliet can become someone s wife. I cannot let it happen! Oh, I want to see her. (Ромео підходить до балкону Джульєти) Romeo: My dear Juliet, I missed you so much! I m so glad to see you now! I know that your parents want Paris to marry you but I cannot let it happen! I cannot forget your eyes!

5 Juliet: My dear Romeo, I missed you so much too! I remember every moment we spent together. I remember our conversations and everything that you told me. I don t want Paris to marry me! If it happens I ll be the most miserable girl in the world! Romeo: Juliet, I want to tell you that I love you so much! I m ready to do everything in order to make you happy. I know that this is so dangerous but I cannot live without you! Will you marry me? Juliet: Yes. But what about our parents? They won t allow us to do this. I don t know what to do and it makes me feel disappointed! Romeo: Your love is enough for me. I know what we have to do. There s one Laurence who can marry us tomorrow. Host: Romeo and Juliet were secretly married by Laurence but Romeo killed Tybalt and the Prince banished Romeo from Verona. Juliet asked Laurence for help. He advised her to take a sleeping potion which would make her seem dead for 42 hours. Laurence had to send a letter to Romeo but he didn t receive it and went to see Juliet. (Остання сцена) Paris: Romeo, what are you doing here? Romeo: I m here to kill you! (Romeo kills Paris) (Прощання) Romeo: My dear Juliet, it s so late. Forgive me. I didn t make you happy. I won t live without you, so I ll take this poison and lay down beside your body. Good bye, my Juliet! (Juliet s waking up) Juliet: Oh, Romeo no You had to receive a letter I had been sleeping for so long. I won t live without you. So I ll kill myself. III. Summing up. 1. Hometask. Your homework for the next time is to write a letter to your friend about your last visit to the theatre. 2. Video-question: What theatre means to you? 3. Assessment of students.
