B We form the simple past form of regular verbs like this: Most verbs + -ed boil boiled Verbs ending in -e + -d receive received Verbs ending in a consonant letter + -y Short verbs ending in a vowel letter + a consonant letter y + -ied double the consonant letter + -ed tidy tidied plan planned When the last syllable of a verb is not stressed, we do not usually double the final consonant when adding -ed, e.g. visit visited. 18

B Irregular verbs have past forms that do not follow the regular spelling rules. They sometimes look very different from the infinitive form of the verb. We can form irregular past forms in the following ways: Change the vowel letter Change the consonant letter Change the word No change get got give gave send sent make made bring brought take took put put cost cost 20
