LARGE GROUP 1
Series at a Glance for Kid-O-Deo About this Series: What would you do if someone told you where to find buried treasure? Would you eat lunch, maybe take a nap, then go get it? No! You would probably go as fast as you could and dig it up! The Bible says that wisdom, the power to make good choices, is like treasure. Making wise choices isn t something you should put off until later; you can start right now. In this series we will look at some of Israel s kings and see how they used the greatest treasure: Wisdom. Memory Verse: Search for wisdom as you would for silver. Hunt for it like hidden treasure. Proverbs 2:4. Weekly Overview: Lesson: Topic: Big Idea: Lesson 1: June 10/11 Lesson 2: June 17/18 : Lesson 4: July 1/2 What s Wisdom Worth? Saul- 1 Samuel 13 The Treasure Map Jehoshaphat- 2 Chronicles Wise Friendships Abigail- 1 Samuel 25 Wise Actions Solomon- 1 Kings 6; Proverbs 9:10; Ecclesiastes. When hunting for the greatest prize, I will learn how to be wise. If it s wisdom that you want to find, you can ask God to be your guide. A helping hand and good advice, a wise friend is beyond price. My hands and feet are important too, I can be wise in what I do. Lesson 5: July 8/9 Lesson 6: July 15/16 Wise When I m Afraid David- 1 Samuel 17 Wise Words Josiah- 2 Kings God will help when I m afraid, a wise choice can still be made. I can make a wise choice with my hands and my voice! 2
Treasure Hunt Series at a Glance for Kid-O-Deo (continued) Week 1: June 10/11- What s Wisdom Worth? King Saul isn t the greatest example of wisdom. Some of the choices he made were silly, and even hurtful. Looking at his story can help us answer the question What s wisdom worth? How important is it to be wise? King Saul, with all his money, power, and fame, couldn t get away with being foolish. Because of his not-wise choices, he lost everything. Wisdom is just as important for us to practice today. Like our memory verse says, wisdom is even worth more than treasure! Week 2: June 17/18- The Treasure Map If wisdom is as valuable as treasure, where s the treasure map that leads us to wisdom? How can we find out what the wise choice is? We are all still learning, which means we make unwise choices sometimes. However, we have a perfect and wise guide to help us God! King Jehoshaphat learned to follow and obey God every time he needed wisdom. When he needed to make important decisions, the first thing Jehoshaphat did was ask for God s help. Week 3: - Wise Friendships Once you have wisdom, how do you use it? One place wisdom is really important is with your friends. When we make wise choices in our friendships, we can have friends that are fun to be with, help us make good choices, and care about us. David learned the value of wise friendships when a woman named Abigail helped him make a wise choice. Whom do you trust to help you make wise choices? Week 4: July 1/2- Wise Actions King David s son, Solomon, was known as the wisest man in the world. He wrote entire books on making wise choices. We have some of those books in our Bible! By looking at the books of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, we will find out how Solomon used the wisdom that God gave him, and learn about some wise choices we can make today. Week 5: July 8/9- Wise When I m Afraid It is hard to be wise when things are going wrong. For a boy named David, following God meant standing up to someone much bigger and stronger. Even though he was scared, David trusted Go to help him make a wise choice. Then, he obeyed what God told him to do, with an amazing result! Even when we are afraid, we can make wise choices with God s help. Week 6: July 15/16- Wise Words Some of the most powerful things you have are the words you use. There are lots of ways we can be wise with our words, but one of the most important is telling the truth. King Josiah told everyone that he was going to follow and obey God, but that meant making a lot of tough choices. When he found God s law, he could have hidden it and acted like everything was fine. Instead, Josiah told the truth and started following God s law, even though it was difficult. 3
What You Need to DO and KNOW Each Week Opening Do This: Create excitement in the room by being enthusiastic as you gather everyone together near the stage. As Kid-Os are entering the large group room, give high-fives, thumbs-up, welcome the Kid-Os by name, dance to and follow along with actions in the song, and get Kid- Os ready to listen and engage. Know This: Creating an environment with lots of energy can help get the Kid-Os excited for what is to come. Interacting with Kid-Os can help them feel known and more comfortable in the environment. Some Kid-Os may still be shy or stand-offish, and that is okay. You will use the time throughout large group to earn their trust and help them engage in the activities and learning. Welcome & Rules Do This: Keep your energy-level high, and get Kid-Os excited to learn together. Go over all three rules in order, but feel free to use various questions or statements to help reinforce the rules. Know This: During this time, you are working to get the Kid-Os excited for the remainder of large group. You can help reduce some of the anxiety Kid-Os may have by giving them a preview of what you ll be talking about later on. Worship Songs Do This: Perform the provided actions to the songs and demonstrate enthusiastic worship for the Kid-Os. Encourage the Kid-Os to join in, sing louder, or do specific actions, but do not force them to participate. Help the Kid-Os engage in singing while continuing to direct them toward God. Know This: Not every Kid-O is going to sing or do actions to the songs. That is okay. Some Kid-Os may be shy or are not interested in singing and worshipping at this point. Memory Verse Do This: Repeat the verse with the Kid-Os three or four times. The first time use very quiet voices, the second time use normal voices, and then we always end using our SUPER, DUPER loud voices! Know This: Do what you can to make this time fun while keeping the Kid-Os focused. Another volunteer approved by kids staff could also lead through this. Kid-O-Whampus Do This: Dance and get Kid-Os excited during the Kid-O-Whampus Rap. Participate in the actions and lead kids as needed. Know This: Some Kid-Os may need more encouragement than others to get involved, but as long as you look like you re having a blast, most of the Kid-Os will get excited about this too. Prayer Do This: Encourage the Kid-Os to be respectful of God and others especially if there is still talking or other distracting actions/noises going on in the room. Know This: We ask Kid-Os to fold their hands and close their eyes so they are less distracted and are being respectful of those around them during prayer. 4

Opening Song 3:00 (Roll when directed) Kid-O-Deo Theme Song Video (Auto advance) Kid-O-Deo Slide Welcome 3:00 Welcome to Kid-O-Deo! My name is, and I am so happy to see all of you here! Today we get to hear a story from the Bible, sing about God, and go on a treasure hunt for the greatest treasure of all, wisdom. Before we get started, let s talk about our three Kid-O-Deo rules. Rule #1: When I m talking you are listening! Everyone put on your listening ears, and on the count of three, let s practice listening! Rule #2: Keep your hands and feet to yourself! Do a little clap and place your hands in your lap! Rule #3: Stay in your spot! Let s take our special glue sticks and put some glue on our spot to help us stay in the right place! Good job learning those, Kid-Os! Following the rules helps us pay attention, have fun, and learn a lot. Following rules is a wise choice. Wisdom or being wise, means choosing to make good choices. From the Bible, we learn that God gives us wisdom. He is always ready to help us make good choices, if we ask Him. Making wise choices helps us to be good friends and family members. Kid-Os, you can be a good friend and family member. Can you repeat that after me? I can be, I CAN BE, a good friend, A GOOD FRIEND, and family member. AND FAMILY MEMBER. Worship 3:00 That is so true. When you help people, share with them, or help them make good choices, you are being a good friend. We can make good choices every day, like choosing to praise God! We can praise and show God we love him by singing, so let s try that now. Stand up, and we ll sing Praise the Lord Every Day. 6
Song 1: Praise the Lord Every Day (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Bible Adventure 5:00 I love singing with all of you. You can sit down, but keep your eyes open. Somewhere around here is a piece of a treasure map. It s got some steps for us to follow as we learn about God. We are looking for the first piece of the map, so we need to find the big number one. Where is it? Do This: Before the service, hide the pieces of the map where kids can see them. Find the piece of the map with the number 1 on it, and show it to the kids. Place it on the Velcro board. This piece of the map says that the first step to finding our treasure is to go on a Bible Adventure. Can you all stand and march to our Bible Adventure? Let s go! Bible Adventure Jingle Good job, Kid-Os! We made it. You can sit down. Since we re on a Bible Adventure, there s one thing we need to have. Do you know what that is? A BIBLE! Do This: Show kids the Bible. Right! We need a Bible for our Bible Adventure! Kid-Os, are the stories in the Bible real or pretend? REAL! That s right, these stories actually happened. The stories and words in the Bible are all things that God wants us to know about. Some of the stories in the Bible are about people who made really wise choices. This story is about a king named David, and a time he needed a good friend. Do This: Get the Bible storybook out and sit down in the chair. This story you are going to hear comes from the Bible, but we use this storybook because the pictures help us imagine what it might have looked like back when the Bible was written. The pictures you see in here are the same as the ones on the screen. Let s get started! Do This: Have kids help you turn the pages on the screen with an exaggerated arm wave. Picture 1: David and his soldiers guarding sheep. 7
David was supposed to be king of the whole land of Israel, but not everything was working out the way he had planned. David was hiding from some people that didn t want him to be king. While David was hiding, he did his best to help other people. For a long time, he and his soldiers guarded the sheep of a man named Nabal (Nay-Ball). They kept thieves and wild animals from getting close to the sheep. Picture 2: Nabal and David s messenger After a few days, David and his men started to get hungry. David sent someone to Nabal to ask if he would give them some food, since they had been taking care of his sheep. Nabal was not a nice man. He laughed at David s messenger, and said that David was only a servant, not a king. Even though David had helped him, Nabal made fun of him. Picture 3: David and his soldiers march When David heard this, he got all of his soldiers, and went to attack Nabal. He was saying I shouldn t have helped Nabal, if he is going to treat me this way. David was angry and wanted to be mean back to Nabal. Nabal s family heard that David was on his way, and they were very afraid. Picture 4: Abigail goes to meet David Nabal s wife was named Abigail. She was a very wise person. Abigail got some food, and went out to meet David and his men. She told David that she was sorry for what Nabal had said. Since Nabal wouldn t help David, Abigail made a meal for all of them. When David listened to Abigail, he realized that he didn t have to be mean to Nabal. David could make a wise choice, and forgive him. Series Title Slide: David needed a wise friend to help him. Abigail helped David see that forgiveness was a much wiser choice than fighting. All of us need a friend like Abigail. Our friends, siblings, and grown-ups that we trust can help us make good choices. That s why having wise friends is so important. You listened really well, Kid-Os! We ve gone on a Bible Adventure, so now we need to find the next part of the map! Do you see the map piece with a big number two on it? 8
Do This: Find the piece of the map with the number two on it, and show it to the kids. Place it on the Velcro board. This piece of the map leads us to our memory verse! Can you stay sitting, and row your boats over to the memory verse? Memory Verse 3:00 Memory Verse Jingle (Auto advance Memory Verse) Search for wisdom as you would for silver. Hunt for it like hidden treasure. Proverbs 2:4. This is a really awesome verse! It talks about hunting, or looking for something that is even better than treasure. Do This: Read the verse from the screen. This verse is about searching for wisdom. Wisdom isn t a thing you can put in a box. Wisdom means choosing to make good choices. Like we learned in the story about Abigail and King David, one place we can find wisdom is by having wise friends, and listening to them. They can help us make good choices! Let s stand up on your feet and let s practice our Memory Verse. Do This: Practice the verse with the Kid-Os 2-3 times. Great job practicing your Memory Verse, Kid-Os! Whenever you remember this verse, think about the people that help you make wise choices. They could be your friends, your grown-ups, or people here at church! Worship 3:00 Wise choices make our friendships, our families, and our lives better. The best way to start making wise choices is to ask for God s help! This song reminds us that Jesus is the very best thing, and we can always ask for his help. Song 2: Better than the Best Thing (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: 9
Application 5:00 Singing with you is so much fun! You can sit down. Abigail and David s story showed us that a great way to be wise is to have good friends. That makes me wonder, though. What does a good friend look like? What does a good friend do? I am going to need your help to find out. Can you find the key to this treasure box I ve got? Do This: Find the key with the kids help, and use it to unlock the box. Take out four pictures. These pictures will each have a story on the back. These pictures have some stories on them! Let s see if the people in them are being good friends. I need you to give me a thumbs up if the person in the story is being a good, wise friend, or give me a thumbs down if they are being a not-wise friend. We ll put the pictures on the screen so everyone can see them. Let s give it a try! Picture: Two boys sitting side-by-side Charlie and Chase are best friends. Charlie feels angry that he lost a game, and is acting mean to others. Chase listens when Charlie talks about what made him angry. Was Chase a good friend? Give me a thumbs up or thumbs down. Picture: Big Thumbs Up! I m seeing a lot of thumbs up out there. That is right. A good friend is someone who helps and listens. Picture: Girl playing softball Annika and her parents had just moved to a new place, and she didn t know anyone. Hannah asked Annika if she would like to play softball. After the game, Hannah said You were really great! I m glad you moved here. Was Hannah being a good friend to Annika? Give me a thumbs up or thumbs down. Picture: Big Thumbs Up! Thumbs up! Hannah helped Annika make new friends and made her feel great. Let s see another picture! 10
Picture: Boy jumping his bike Bryce s grown-ups told him not to do dangerous things on his bike, like jumping off a ramp. Bryce s friend Jordan called Bryce a chicken, and teased him until Bryce tried it. Was Jordan being a good friend? Thumbs up or thumbs down. Picture: Big Thumbs Down That one is a thumbs down. Good friends help us stay safe, and remind us to listen to our grown-ups. Bryce doesn t have to stop being friends with Jordan, but he probably shouldn t listen to him more than his grown-ups. I have one more story for you! Picture: Boy and girl. This is Lance and Eva. When Lance spilled red juice all over the new carpet in his house, he was scared to tell his grown-ups, because he might get in trouble. Eva reminded Lance that it was just an accident, and that if he kept it a secret, he probably would get in trouble later. Then, she said she would talk to Lance s grown-ups with him, so he wouldn t feel as scared. Was Eva being a good friend? Picture: Big Thumbs Up! Thumbs up or thumbs down. Yes! A good friend will always help us tell the truth, even if we don t feel like it. Series Title Slide: Great friends help us make wise choices, like trying again when we mess up, listening to our grown-ups, trying new things, and telling the truth. When you have a friend that helps you be wise, it s great to spend time with them. Ask for her or his help when you need to make important choices. That friend could be someone here in Kid-O-Deo, a grown-up who loves God, or even your brother or sister! You did a great job listening, Kid-Os. We almost have this map finished, do you see a piece with the number three on it? 11
Do This: Find the piece of the map with the number three on it, and show it to the kids. Place it on the Velcro board. The trail leads us to the Big Idea! Can you all stand up, and climb up a big rock wall to our Big Idea? Do This: Act as if you are climbing a rock wall, as the Big Idea Jingle starts. Big Idea 2:00 Big Idea Jingle This Big Idea will help us remember what today s story and lesson were all about. Let s say hi to Ranger Ron! Know This: The Big Idea is, A helping hand and good advice, a wise friend is beyond price. Big Idea Video (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Thanks, Ranger Ron! It s important to know which friends we can trust to help us make wise choices. There is one more piece of the map missing, and I think it has something really fun on it. Do you see the piece of the map with the number four on it? Do This: Find the piece of the map with the number 4 on it, and show it to the kids. Place it on the Velcro board. Kid-O-Whampus 2:00 This piece of the map says our last step is to dance over to Kid-O-Whampus! Kid-O-Whampus: Power Up (Auto-Advance) Let s Pray 12
Prayer 2:00 That was a lot of fun! You can all sit down. Let s take a minute to pray. Praying is what we call it when we talk to God. God is the greatest friend we can ever have. He will always help us to make good choices, and He is always ready to listen. You can pray anytime and anywhere, but when we pray here in Kid-O-Deo we like to fold our hands in our laps and close our eyes, so we are only thinking about the words we are saying to God. If you want, you can repeat the words of this prayer after me. Dear God, we love you. Thank you for loving us. Help us to listen to wise friends. Amen. Kid-O-Deo Slide I have loved spending time with you, Kid-Os. Now it s time for you to go back to your classrooms where you will get into groups with your leader and other Kid-Os, have a snack, and do a fun activity. See you later! 13
