PTE Young Learners - Breakthrough Hello kids, hello boys and girls. Today s test is Breakthrough. Tasks One and Two are listening. Good luck and have fun!! Task One: Let s Go to the Zoo Mrs Brown is talking to Ben. Listen to their conversation. After each part of the conversation, answer the question. Put a cross in the box under the correct picture. You will hear the conversation twice. First, listen to the example. [ TONE/BEEP ] [ FIVE SECOND PAUSE ] Example: Where has Ben just been? Hello Ben. Have you been at school all this time? No I was with some friends in the playground and then I went to the park to meet John. The correct answer is B. Now answer the other questions. Number 1: How did Mrs Brown get the ticket for the zoo? I ve got some news Ben. I ve got a family ticket for Oxley Zoo. Did you get it on the internet? No, I was in town speaking to Dad on my mobile, and then I saw my friend Mary. She gave it to me. That s great. Number 2: How much did Mrs Brown s family ticket cost? Oxley Zoo s expensive Mum. Ten pounds per person. Yes but Mary gave me this one for twelve pounds fifty. And it s a family ticket. Wow! Usually a family ticket is twenty five pounds. I know. 1

Number 3: Who has been to Oxley Zoo before? Anna went to Oxley Zoo with the school last year, didn t she? No, Mum, that was Sophie. Anna hasn t been there. Oh yes. That s right Ben. And when we go, it ll be my first time too. Number 4: When might it rain? So when are we going Mum? Well, it s definitely not going to rain on Saturday or Sunday and we do want good weather. Yes but it could be wet on Friday. They said that on TV. Number 5: What is Sophie doing on Sunday? It s not a good idea to go on Sunday Mum. Why not? Have you got a swimming lesson Ben? No but Sophie s got a piano lesson. At the music school. Number 6: What can the Browns see at the zoo at 12.30pm? At the zoo, can we see the crocodiles eating their food? Yes but that s quite late. Before that, at half past twelve they give the lions their food. Wow. There s a small cinema too and in the mornings they show films of elephants. 2

Number 7: What will be the most interesting animal for Anna? Do you want to see the sharks Mum? Yes and the butterflies. I want to see the snakes. So does Anna. She s really interested in them. She s doing a school project about them. Number 8: What is Ben going to take to the zoo? I m taking my mobile phone with me to the zoo. It s a camera too. No, don t do that. You ll lose it. You can use mine. OK but I m taking my animal book. I can read about the different animals. You will now hear the conversation again. Now listen to the example. [TONE/BEEP] [REPEAT RECORDED TEXT] [FIVE SECOND PAUSE] That is the end of Task One. Now go on to Task Two. 3

Task Two: Ben Invites Alex to the Zoo Ben phones his friend Alex. Listen to the conversation. After each part of the conversation, write a short answer to the question. You will hear the conversation twice. First, listen to the example. [ TONE/BEEP ] [ FIVE SECOND PAUSE ] (Alex: a boy) Example: Who answers Ben s phone call? Girl: Girl: Hello. Hello is that Alex s mum? No, it s Alex s sister. Who s calling? Ben. Can I speak to Alex please? The correct answer is Alex s sister. Now answer the other questions. Number 1: What is Alex doing when Ben phones him? Girl: (calling to Alex) Alex! Are you watching television? Ben s on the phone for you. (calling back) No, I m reading. I don t always watch television you know. Just a minute. I m coming down. Number 2: What will Alex do on Sunday? Hi Ben. Hi. Alex, do you want to come to the zoo this weekend? On Saturday or Sunday? Saturday. Usually I help my mum with the housework on Saturdays but I d rather go to the zoo. What about your homework? 4

I ll do that on Sunday. I don t like doing homework on Saturdays. Number 3: When did Ben last go to a zoo? How many zoos have you been to, Ben? Lots but I haven t been to one since last summer. And you didn t go on the school trip to the zoo in January? No I was ill. I couldn t go. Number 4: What time are the Brown family going to meet Alex? What time are you planning to leave, Ben? Not before nine o clock I hope. No, we ll come for you at ten Alex. I think we ll get to the zoo about eleven. The zoo closes at five so we ll have a lot of time there. OK. I ll be ready. Number 5: Where is Alex going to wait for the Brown family? Shall we meet you outside your house Alex? Comment [VB1]: In the printing it seems there is not enough space between the title and the paragraph It ll be easier if I meet you at the bus stop. It s difficult to turn in my road and the bus stop isn t far from my house. Good idea. My mum s a terrible driver! She s better than my dad! Number 6: How much money is Alex going to take with him? How much money are you taking Ben? Just five pounds, Alex. You know, for sweets and ice cream. But you don t need any money, Alex. My mum will pay for you. 5

I always take money when I go out. I might want to buy something. I ve got ten pounds in my cupboard. I ll take that. Number 7: What is Alex planning to buy in the zoo shop? Is there a shop at the zoo, Ben? Yes, it s got books, posters, and food and drink of course. That s good because I want a poster of a rhino. But tigers are your favourite animals Alex. I know but I like rhinos too. You will now hear the conversation again. Now listen to the example. [TONE/BEEP] [REPEAT RECORDED TEXT] [FIVE SECOND PAUSE] That is the end of the listening tasks. Now go on to Task Three. 6

Write your answers on the question paper. You will have six minutes at the end of the test to copy your answers onto the answer sheet.
