2 Quick write! When you want something (a friend to do you a favor, a parent to lend you some money, a teacher to forgive you for being late to class ) how do you approach that person? What do you do to convince or manipulate that person to do what you want?

3 Rhetoric- the art of effective speaking The three main rhetorical styles Logos- The speaker attempts to appeal to the audience s logical or reasoning side Pathos- The speaker attempts to appeal to the audience s emotional or sympathetic side Ethos- The character of the speaker is used to appeal to the audience

4 We use each of these techniques everyday... Logos- appeals to Logic Mr. Funk, can I go to the bathroom?! You should really let me go now since class hasn t even started yet and you still have to collect homework... mine is on my desk.

5 We use each of these techniques everyday... Pathos- appeals to emotion Mr. Funk, can I go to the bathroom?! Oh please!?! My other teacher wouldn t let me go and now I m in pain, and I will be so embarrassed if...

6 We use each of these techniques everyday... Ethos- based on the character of the speaker Mr. Funk, can I go to the bathroom?! I just got a 97 on that essay and I faithfully come to extra help all the time!!

7 Identify which rhetorical strategy is being used in each example The Pink Panther sure does have the blues. He is afraid that you won t vote for him as your favorite cartoon character. Boy Pathos! The Pink Panther would is trying it be a to shame appeal to to disappoint your emotions a guy who has spent so much of his time bringing joy into our lives. Help the Pink Panther out of his blues, vote for him as your favorite cartoon character.

With his speed and super powers, he can accomplish any task that Logos! Sonic is is trying to appeal to your logic! needs to be done. The wise would choose Sonic, who else can defeat the bad guys for you and crack some good jokes? This is the intelligent choice, it makes the most sense.
