2 CONJUGATION: WHAT S THAT? From Encarta: to state the forms of a verb: A verb such as "to speak" ("to speak" is the infinitive form in English. The same form, the infinitive form, is "hablar" in Spanish) has forms that vary according to who is doing the speaking, for example, and when. In English, you conjugate without thinking. (I think, you think, she thinks it looks different when the person is she ) HOW DO I CONJUGATE A VERB? Step 1: know the verb infinitive (the word that ends in ar, -er, or ir) you wish to conjugate Step 2: take off the ar, -er, or ir ending Step 3: add on the new ending that matches the person Example: I want to say I talk in Spanish. Hablar means to talk, and yo means I. So, let s conjugate hablar in the 1 st person yo form. 1. Hablar = to talk 2. Hablar habl 3. Hablo Yo hablo = I talk
3 Use this chart to help you determine what ending to put on a verb when you conjugate. In 5 th Grade, you learned the endings for 3 types of verbs: AR, -ER, and IR. Yo/vivir = yo 2. Ella/beber = ella 3. Nosotros/bailar = nosotros 4. Tú/comer = tú 5. Ellos/escribir = ellos 6. Él/tomar = él 7. Yo/levantar = yo 8. Ella/correr = ella 9. Ustedes/tomar = ustedes 10. Yo/estudiar = yo
5 Stem-Changing Verbs These verbs are called BOOT verbs because when we look at a verb chart, the forms of the verb that DO have a spelling change form the shape of a boot. The NOSOTROS form is outside of the boot, so it does NOT change spelling in the stem. Here is an example of how to change the stem in order to conjugate one of these verbs. The chart below shows the stem-changing verbs taught in 5 th grade and the spelling changes that they have. o-ue e-ie u-ue dormir empezar jugar poder volver perder querer

7 ir is the verb to go This is how it s conjugated: The expression Ir + a If you want to express that you re going to do something use this pattern: I go/am going = Yo voy You go/are going = Tú vas He goes/is going = Él va She goes/is going = Ella va ir + a + infinitive We go/are going = Nosotros vamos They go/are going = Ellos van a means to (in this phrase) infinitive this is the unconjugated form of a verb (ends in ar/er/ir) What are you going to do? (swim, drink, talk, eat, dance, etc.) I am going to dance = Yo voy a bailar. She is going to sing = Ella va a cantar. We are going to begin = Vamos a empezar. Directions: Fill in the blanks to translate each phrase. 1. We are going to sing. = Nosotros. 2. She is going to talk. = Ella.
8 The expression tener + que If you want to express that you HAVE to do something use this pattern: tener + que + infinitive tener is the verb to have This is how it s conjugated: I have = Yo tengo You have = Tú tienes He has = Él tiene She has = Ella tiene We have = Nosotros tenemos They have = Ellos tienen que means to (in this phrase) infinitive this is the unconjugated form of a verb (ends in ar/er/ir) What are you going to do? (swim, drink, talk, eat, dance, etc.) I have to study = Yo tengo que estudiar. She has to clean = Ella tiene que limpiar. We have to work = Nosotros tenemos que trabajar. Directions: Fill in the blanks to translate each phrase. 1. We have to study. = Nosotros. 2. You have to work. = Tú.
9 The verbs interesar and aburrir and gustar To express something interests me, say Me interesa To express something bores me, say Me aburre To express I like something, say Me gusta.. Me interesa el futbol. (Soccer interests me.) Me aburre la escuela. (School bores me.) Me gusta la pizza. (Pizza pleases me OR, I like pizza.) ***Just add NO if something DOESN T interest, bore, or please No me interesa el futbol. (Soccer doesn t interest me.) No me interesa la escuela. (School doesn t interest me.) No me gusta la tarea. (I don t like homework.) To express any of these things when talking TO another person, or asking them a question (YOU like Does basketball interest YOU?) Me gusta la pizza. I like pizza. change the me in the phrase to te Te gusta la pizza? Do you like pizza? **When we talk about interest, boredom, or liking of something that is plural, or a list of things, we use these formats: Me interesan Me aburren Me gustan Me interesan los gatos. (Cats interest me.) Me aburren las matemáticas. (Math bores me.) Me gustan los perros. (I like dogs.)
