Purdy, Associate Professor, History, John Carroll University, University Heights, OH USA, COURSE DESCRIPTION: HSZ310 Japanese History: Edo & Tokyo introduces students to major themes in premodern, early modern and modern Japanese history with emphasis on how these themes are played out in the urban development of Edo and Tokyo. Along with analysis of scholarly texts and readings, students will also examine through firsthand encounters how the history of the city is manifested today. Gennifer-Weisenfeld/4270/article.html COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Quiz...10% Exam no % Exam no % Map Quiz...8% Edo Essay...12% Edo-Tokyo Museum Field Trip/Activity...10% Attendance...5% Class Participation...5% QUIZ: The quiz may include multiple choice and short answer questions on lectures and readings up to the creation of Edo in the Tokugawa Era EXAM No. 1: The test may consist of multiple choice, short answer and essay questions and will cover the Tokugawa and Meiji Eras. 2
3 EXAM No. 2: The exam may include multiple choice and short answer questions on lectures and readings since the Meiji Era to the present day. MAP QUIZ: Students will draw a map of Japan s four main islands and name and locate historical significant cities, regions, and geographic features. EDO ESSAY: Using assigned readings and images students will write a 3-page essay which describes activities of the merchant class in the Tokugawa Era. Essay is due and will be discussed in class 1 August. (Materials posted on Moodle and Google.doc.) EDO-TOKYO MUSEUM ACTIVITY: Students will complete an assignment as part of a class time field trip to the Edo-Tokyo Museum. The field trip is tentatively scheduled for 26 July. Assignment due and will be discussed in class 27 July. (Date of field trip and assignments subject to change based on Summer Session after class activities.) Students will need to pay museum entrance fee, 480 with student ID, 600 without ID and train fare to and from the museum, (1-4-1 Yokoami, Sumida-ku, at Ryokoku Station; closed Mondays). NB: Because of travel, the field trip will likely extend beyond class time, 12:40-2:50. If class enrollment is too large, they will be no class on 27 July and students will need to visit the Museum on their own.) CLASS PARTICIPATION and ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to come to class having completed the assigned reading, including the readings on Moodle and Google.doc. For the short stories, students should focus on the images of the city and the activities of the characters.
