B: We ll be talking about the island of The Statue of Liberty. Yes. Today we ll be talking about Lady Liberty again and pay a visit to Liberty Island. (slide 2) (6 min) C, Can you read the title, please? C: Liberty State Park. Well, let s get started.? (click for picture and Liberty state park caption) D, please describe the image and caption. D: The statue and the island are called Liberty Park Yes, that s right, the statue and the whole island are a park. Now parks have visiting hours, when do you think this park is open? Which hours, which days? E? E: Maybe XXXXXXX That s a very good guess A! Any other ideas? Anyone? A: I think it is open on Sundays, xxxxxxxxxxxx Good answer D! Now, think back to the different seasons, when would there be the most visitors? Which season is the busiest? B:XXXXXXXXXXX Yes, you are right B, the summer is the busiest. D: It s about getting to the island. Yes, let s talk about getting to Liberty Island to see the Statue of Liberty! E, how do you think people get to the island? E: they go by boat? Very good E, the kind of boat people use to get there is called a ferry, (click for pic 1 and caption) the ferry takes people to and from the island all day! Now, do you think there are any other ways to get there? A? A: people who have a boat can use it? Educastream 2

B: How much is it? Thank you. (click for pic of island). And now is the visit an expensive one? Let s talk a little about the admission to Liberty state park. What does admission mean? C? C: that you can go on the island/visit the park/statue That is right C, it means entering. And what is an admission or entrance fee? D? D: the money you pay Exactly, it is how much you have to pay to enter. E, how much do you think it costs to visit Liberty State Park? E: xxxx dollars That s a good guess! What do the rest of you think, is it more or less? A/B/C/D/E: XXXXX Well, I have a surprise for you (click for blue caption) Admission is FREE! Can you believe it? But (click for but) there is a catch! You have to pay for the ferry! (click for ferry ticket prices and caption) A, can you tell us how much it costs to take the ferry? How much would you pay? A: $9.50 (for example!) Very good A! B, How much would a senior citizen pay? B: A senior citizen would pay $9.50. Yes. And C, How much would a child under 3 years old pay on the ferry? C: The child would use the ferry for free. Well done! What about a family of two parents and two babies under 3: how much would they pay? X: 23 dollars? Brilliant, X! So is admission really free? (click for red line on left) E, how many steps do you think there are from the bottom to the top of the pedestal? Just take a guess! E: (any number) You think? Does everyone agree? Are there more? fewer? B/C/D: XXX (click for caption) A, How many steps are there? A: There are 192 steps. That s correct. Now what about going all the way up to the crown(click for red line on the right)? Any guesses as to how many steps? B: XXXXXXX Very close B, there are 354 steps (click for caption) that s a lot of stairs. How do you think people feel after climbing that? C: very tired You are right, probably very tired! But I have some bad news, before, visitors could go all the way up to the crown (click for box on the left) But, now they are not allowed up in the crown anymore. Well, ( click for pic 2 and arrow). Do you see these little rectangles? Any ideas what they are? D: windows Very good guess. (click for caption) They are windows, and what could visitors see through the windows? E? E: New York/ the ocean/xxx Exactly! But as I said, visitors are no longer allowed to go go there. A, When did the island close? A: It closed on September 11th, Yes. Does anyone know what happened on that day? A/B/C/D/E: planes crashed in the towers??/there was a terrorist attack Educastream 4

A: you must take your coins and keys out of your pocket Exactly, it says we have to take our keys and money out of our pockets. And B, (click for 2 nd red arrow) what is this machine? What does it do? B: it takes a radio (=French word) of your bags Yes, it s an x-ray machine (click for x-ray caption and second part of text), it shows us what is inside things, like bags and coats. C, what must go through the x-ray machine? C: All personal belongings must go through the x-ray machine. Yes. (click for gun = picture 3) D, what is this? D: It is a revolver(french again!) (click for gun caption) It s a gun (click for knife = picture 4) And E, what s this? E: It s a knife. Yes E, it s a knife.(click for knife caption) they are weapons. A, Can you bring weapons to the island or to public places? A:no, you can t, it is too dangerous That s correct, you cannot! Can you think of any other places where there are security checks like this one? A/B/C/D: XXXX Very good everyone, airports, museums, stations,.. (slide 8) (4.5 min) And now a few other things that you cannot bring on the island. (click for pic 1). B, what is this? B:???/I don t know/ a case/suitcase Yes/Well it s a suitcase (click for caption) You cannot bring a suitcase with you! (click for pic 2) C, Why? C:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Yes. Something could be hidden inside it. D, what s this? D:it is a baby car???/ chair/??? Yes, it s a pushchair, for children. (click for caption) And visitors with babies cannot bring one either. 7 Yes, it s a simple backpack (click for caption) No backpacks allowed! And here come the surprising things, (click for pic 4) A, your turn! A: you cannot eat or drink You cannot have any food or drinks (click for caption) anywhere near the statue. B, can you think why not? B: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Good/It is to avoid rubbish in the park. And the last one, (click for pic 5) C? C: chewing gum???? That s right! No chewing gum (click for caption) is allowed anywhere on the island. (click for pic 6) B, tell us what you see in this pic. B: there is chewing gum under the shoe D, do you know why? D: XXXXXXXXXXXXX Yes, sticky chewing-gum! It makes a mess and is hard to clean. Imagine 15,000 pieces of gum a day! Good job, everyone! E: It is surrounded by water and I see New York/buildings in the distance Yes, the statue is on an island, the buildings and the city are far away. Now what can you tell me about this? (click for pic2 ) Why don t you start,a. A: It is not Lady Liberty because there are buildings near the statue You are right, very good A. (click for text From Las Vegas ) Actually, this is a copy or replica made for a big hotel and casino in Las Vegas! (click for pic3 and... ) Now what about this one? Do you remember, B? It is filled with water and little white flakes which float up and fall down when you shake it. Now here are some more items that can be souvenirs. (click for images) Can you tell me what they are?
