2 Reading You are going to read an article about how technology is used in sport. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A-G the one which fits each gap (1-). There is one extra sentence you do not need to use. The Science of Winning Our reporter asked football manager Brian Bates about how technology helps him in his work. For football manager Brian Bates, the top priority is to get the best out of his team. I need to know every detail of each team member s performance, he says, from how long he holds the ball to the speed of his kick. This may sound impossible but, as I found out from Brian, with the right technology, it can be done. Brian gave an example of the way sports clubs have used technology to get ahead. In 2003, Manchester United paid million to sign a teenager called Cristiano Ronaldo. Although the Portuguese youngster had great talent, the team manager sensed a problem, so he used a sophisticated computer and video system to examine Ronaldo s performance. 1 As soon as the error was brought to light, Brian explained, Ronaldo started scoring repeatedly and became one of United s best players ever. Ronaldo playing for Manchester United Brian also uses this state-ofthe-art technology to examine his players performance. He pointed at several video cameras installed around the stadium. 2 Every time a player runs, passes, tackles and strikes throughout a 90-minute game, the play is captured by this equipment. Nothing is missed. Whereas television cameras tend to focus only on one-eighth of the whole pitch, these cameras provide a 30 view of the field. 33 The information recorded on camera is analysed and calculated so that a coach can find out exactly how far and how quickly each team member ran. I use all this data to prepare the feedback session for the team, said Brian. I show them statistics and figures from the game and we watch the playback on a big screen. Then we discuss what needs to be improved. 3 Brian points out that when the players analyse their own performance in this way, it makes them think hard about how to approach the next game and the opposing team. It also helps the coaches determine their strategy for the following week s training programme. This performance analysis tool tells Brian how effective each player is by making their strengths and weaknesses more visible. 4 This system has been responsible for ending quite a few careers, Brian admitted. I had one player, a defender, who used to stay out late at night before a game. He would try and conceal his fatigue because he didn t want to be left out of the game the next day. He tried to play as usual, but he didn t stand a chance. His reaction time had slowed down considerably. This player was putting himself before the team you can t win with players like that. In the late 1990s two young businessmen had a brainwave which led to the particular system Brian uses today. The businessmen had improved facilities at one club by designing massage chairs which players would sit in after training. While they were relaxing, they would chat and read newspapers. 5 This ingenious idea prompted the businessmen to set about developing a performance analysis tool. Improved technology and advice from football coaches like Brian have helped create the sophisticated and efficient system they use today. I remember when game strategy was planned out on a blackboard with chalk, Brian laughed. Clubs are prepared to spend a lot of money obtaining this kind of technology to help coaches develop new talent and get ahead of the opposition, he explained. It gives you an edge over your competition and believe me, in our job, we need all the help we can get. 5 A B C D E F G He always tells his players that the work they have to do is not just on the pitch; it s also in their heads. They identify the players and record their movements every tenth of a second. It is claimed that without them, many football careers would never have taken off. This is bad news for team members who aren t pulling their weight. What became apparent was that he was holding on to the ball for a second too long before passing or striking. But football has moved on since then and today these performance systems are used worldwide. Someone commented that if the players had videos of the matches, the relaxation time could be better spent watching and learning from them. The 18 competitors were scored for their technique and a trophy was given to the winner. But it was more about taking part than winning. What made the event really special was the unique location. The athletes moves looked Par 3: even more spectacular with the beautiful scenery in the background. The atmosphere was friendly. The crowd cheered at every trick, and everyone was chatting and laughing with the people around them. Par 4: All in all, it really was an unforgettable experience. Saying it was an unforgettable experience is more effective than saying it was a nice experience.
