4 Grammar: Pronouns Key Concept: Writers use pronouns to avoid repeating nouns and to make their writing more precise. Pronouns A pronoun takes the place of a noun or of another pronoun. Look at the following examples of pronouns from. With Pronouns: All the way home I was in the clouds, Hastings talking and I not hearing a word. When we reached my suite, he said to me: Without Pronouns: All the way home Henry was in the clouds, Hastings talking and Henry not hearing a word. When Henry and Hastings reached Henry s suite, Hastings said to Henry: Pronouns can refer to the first person, second person, or third person. Here is a list of personal pronouns: First person: I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, ours Second Person: you, your, yours Third Person: she, her, hers, he, him, his, it, its, they, them, their, theirs Activity Rewrite each sentence, supplying a pronoun to replace the underlined word or words. 1. Don't drop either of the ls: national + ly = nationally.
