Metaphor a direct comparison between two or more seemingly unrelated subjects Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes How do you measure, measure a year? In daylights, in sunsets, In midnights, in cups of coffee? In inches, in miles, In laughter, in strife? In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes, How do you measure a year in the life?

Personification Giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics) to animals or non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas). 15 Alliteration When successive words begin with the same consonant sound or letter Crowded streets are cleared away, - one by one Hollow heroes separate as they run You're so cold - keep your hand in mine Wise men wonder while strong men die

End-Stop when each line in a poem is a complete phrase Empty spaces - what are we living for? Abandoned places - I guess we know the score... On and on! Does anybody know what we are looking for? Another hero - another mindless crime. Behind the curtain, in the pantomime. Hold the line! Does anybody want to take it anymore?

Enjambment when the line continues into the next So I walk up on high and I step to the edge to see my world below. And I laugh at myself while the tears roll down, cause it's the world I know. It's the world I know.

Rhyme Scheme A way to show the pattern established by words that rhyme A B A B A A B B I dream of rain I dream of gardens in the desert sand I wake in vain I dream of love as time runs through my hand A B A B

Slant Rhyme a rhyme in which the sounds are similar, but not exact The dream was light and fragrant nights But how were you to know The streets are hard, they re mean and scared Where only fools find gold

Internal Rhyme A rhyme occurring within the line When I find the living a bore there's a place I go; I answer the call, go over a wall where the crosses are all in a row. I mind the trees, get down on my knees - There's a hole in the gate - I look around, that I won't be found And sit down next to his grave

In the End Listen to the song & follow along with the lyrics Note words you do not understand Discussion What song is about Identify Poetic Devices Response

Find examples in your own music of: Alliteartion End-Stop Enjambment Rhyme Scheme End Rhyme Slant Rhtme Internal Rhyme
