4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: General Description: Topic: Misplaced Adverbs of Frequency (5-6 minutes) Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens, happened or will happen. Some examples of Adverbs of frequency are: Always, usually, every, never, often, rarely, seldom, sometimes, hardly ever and scarcely. Some adverbs of frequency are often misplaced. These adverbs follow certain rules when used in a sentence. Remember: Some adverbs are often misplaced. Examples: Always cannot be placed at the beginning or end of the sentence. Wrong: Always, I make sure the plants are watered. Correct: I always make sure the plants are watered. Never, seldom and rarely cannot be placed at the end of the sentence. Wrong: I have gone to the United States never. Correct:: I have never gone to the United States. The adverbs "hardly ever", "never" and "scarcely" cannot be placed at the beginning of the sentence. If they are, subject-verb inversion occurs. Wrong: Never I have traveled alone. Correct: Never have I traveled alone. Comprehension Check: Always cannot be placed in what part of the sentence. Page 4
