Overview More on Video Games Translation Game Localization Scenario Translating humour in video games Humour in Video Games Humour Translation in Final Fantasy Exercises in AVT
Game Localization Scenario From O Hagan and Mangiron 2013: 141
Translating Video Games Translating Video games involves: Localization coordinator Translator(s) Reviewers Testers Professional actors Localised games should have the same look and feel as the original and provide the same game play experience to the target players (skopos) Awkward, unidiomatic language and cultural references should be avoided. Hence, (in-house) localizers can: Use vivid idiomatic language Easy language for tutorials Modify, omit jokes and/or cultural references Include new elements, etc.
Humour in Video Games No humour in video games because of repetition. However: Humour makes gaming more engaging Humour can help release the tension, relax and facilitate gameplay Humour can help social interaction and can be used to influence other people s actions and feelings Humour is crucial for character design Humour entertains and facilitates gameplay.
Game Translation Final Fantasy Final Fantasy ( ファイナルファンタジー Fainaru Fantajī) is a fantasy roleplaying video game created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, developed and first published in Japan by Square, now Square-Enix Fifteen series have be produced to date The story follows four youths called the Light Warriors. Together, they quest to defeat evil forces and save the world. Series VII first localised in 1997 and English as pivot language
Humour in Final Fantasy Self-referencing (recurrent elements, e.g. chocobos) for engaging purposes Characterisation Design (look, dress, behaviour, way of speaking) Idiolect or dialect (language deviance) References to gender and sexuality; ambiguity (not easy to retain in languages such as Spanish or Italian) Wordplay and puns (new humour in the TT) The main function of video games is to entertain. While playing, user must complete a task and this can be stressful. Humour helps the process. Localisers may nee to establish the different norms of humour in the SC and TC. Translators become transcreators. Freedom in localisation is essential
Humour Translation in Final Fantasy Replacing humorous elements in the SL by a different one in the TL Use of dialects and accents not present in the original for comic purposes Introducing new puns and play on words to bring the game closer to the players
Final fantasy Example 1
