Papers submitted more than one day late will not be marked. Part A. Design a movie poster for a movie based on one of the following: From the Canterville Ghost and Other Stories 1. The Happy Prince 2. The Star-child 3. The Nightingale and the Rose 4. The Model Millionaire From Longman Edge 5. Nightwing: The Movie 6. Annoying Orange: The Movie 7. The Opening 8. Monkey King and Dragon King The movie poster should contain: A drawing representing the work (remember not to show the ending) The title of the movie A tagline The words based on a story by Oscar Wilde (for No. 1-4 only). The director s name and the names of the main actors (make them up if they are not given!) A quote from a movie reviewer (make it up!) Part B. Describe the design in words (Write on every line and indicate the number of words at the bottom of the page. The following topics should be covered: Why you chose a particular scene or image and how your poster brings out the theme or spirit of the movie; Why you chose certain design features (e.g., colours, composition or layout, fonts, etc.). 1. Discussion In your opinion, what makes a good movie poster? 2. Taglines Match the movie to its tagline. The first one is done for you. a) Forrest Gump Superbad. Superdad. b) Inside Out Here's to the fools who dream. c) Harry Potter and the Philosopher s Stone The world will never be the same once you have seen it through the eyes of Forrest Gump. d) Despicable Me Power. Grace. Wisdom. Wonder. e) Alien Journey beyond your imagination f) Wonder Woman Meet the little voices inside your head. g) La La Land Experience the tale as old as time. h) Beauty and the Beast In space no one can hear you scream. 1

2 3. Examples (examples and analysis from: SKH Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School According to Tony Seiniger, the man behind the Jaws poster, there are two rules when it comes to creating an iconic movie poster. First of all, it needs to be different: something nobody has seen before that'll get it attention. But that s only the beginning. The poster has to tell its story in mere seconds. "That's the challenge, to try get two hours of entertainment down into a simple graphic you can read in three seconds," Seiniger explains. He certainly rose to the challenge here, with the instantly recognisable image of the great white rising from the depths to snack on a bathing beauty. Not that the final image came easily Seiniger s agency spent six months perfecting the poster. Tagline: 3.1 What are the two rules of creating an iconic movie poster? 3.2 Why did they decide to show the shark from underneath? No matter what we did, it didn t look scary enough. The problem was that no matter how they were drawn, the sharks ended up looking more like friendly dolphins. Then, in a stroke of genius, Seiniger realised where they had been going wrong. You had to actually go underneath the shark so you could see his teeth. Brendan Dawes, MoMA-exhibited artist, designer, author and maker: "I love how the shark is so large compared to the swimmer, almost to a cartoon-like level, but there's certainly no humour here. This is a terrifying image, with the shark almost looking like the top of a blade or a missile.the whole thing is beautifully composed including the handdrawn, now iconic type with the little fishhook of the 'J'." 2

3 Telling the tale of how two lives Mitsuha and Taki are changed forever through a falling star, the poster design for Your Name keeps in line with the film s design as a whole and allows insight into the storyline. Placing the star directly in the middle of the characters proves its importance while the landscapes offer an awareness of the difference in characters. By placing their backs to us, the poster suggests that the characters are looking to the future, rather than the present. 3.4 Mistuha (the boy) lives in an u environment, while Taki (the girl) lives in a r environment. This suggests that the film has two different s. 3.5 Why is the falling star placed in the middle? Whilst the film itself divided opinions, there s no denying that the art direction for DC s 'Suicide Squad' was an eye-catching marvel. Using garish, neon colours throughout and putting the characters in place of a skull s mouth is a simple but satisfying nod to the suicide aspect of the title. Placing the Joker away from the group and in particular, on the x of the eye suggests that the character is the target of the movie. Title of film: Genre: 3.6 What are the Chinese words for a) Garish b) Neon c) Eye-catching 3

4 4. Analysis Look online for posters of your favorite films (e.g., Inception movie poster). Find one poster you think is especially good and one poster you think is especially bad. Resize them (you can do this in Microsoft Word), print them out and paste them in the space below. Effective Poster Ineffective Poster Tagline: Things you like about the poster: Tagline: Things you dislike like about the poster: 4
