2 Talkabout April / May 2 As the year keeps rolling on we are fast approaching the first set of school holidays. We have many things happening in the next couple of months, Easter is first with Good Friday falling on 14th April, Anzac Day, as usual is 25th April and Mother s Day is 14th May, From 8 14 May 2017 thousands of events across the country will be held to say thank you to the 6 million Australians who volunteer. So to all the volunteers who generously give up their spare time, from the bottom of our hearts we thank you all. Have a safe and happy Easter! EXPRESSION OF INTEREST Community Support Centre Innisfail is looking for any talented people who would like to share their skills with other members of the community in a fun filled group setting. If you are artistic, dance, cook or have some other hobby or craft that you would be happy to teach or demonstrate as a one-off introductory session, please contact Natasha at the Community Support Centre Innisfail Inc. on Congratulations The Cassowary Coast worked its way into the Guinness World Records with a 8.04km banana split the longest in the world. Innisfail s Callendar Park was transformed into a sea of people, cardboard frames and banana splits, as communities came together to beat the record previously held by Selinsgrove in Pennsylvania, USA, since What a wonderful achievement. Congratulations to all involved. PAID ADVERTISING

3 Talkabout April / May 3 National Volunteer Week (NVW) is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation's volunteers. Established in 1989, National Volunteer Week is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our community and to say thank you to the more than 6 million Australians who volunteer. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family, and your community. The right match can help you to reduce stress, find friends, reach out to the community, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. It is also great for families, children watch everything you do. By giving back to the community, you show them firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help other people and animals and enact change. It s also a valuable way for you to get to know organizations in the community and find resources and activities for your children and family Benefits of volunteering: 4 ways to feel healthier and happier 1. Volunteering connects you to others 2. Volunteering is good for your mind and body 3. Volunteering can advance your career 4. Volunteering brings fun and fulfillment to your life Benefit 1: Volunteering connects you to others One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping out with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to the lives of people, animals, and organizations in need. And volunteering is a two-way street: It can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, and boost your social skills. Increase your social and relationship skills While some people are naturally outgoing, others are shy and have a hard time meeting new people. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to practice and develop your social skills, since you are meeting regularly with a group of people with common interests. Once you have momentum, it s easier to branch out and make more friends and contacts. Why Volunteer? Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community, but the benefits can be even greater for you, the volunteer. Volunteering and helping others can help you reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. While it s true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you ll experience, volunteering doesn t have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time out of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help those in need and improve your health and happiness.

4 Talkabout April / May 4 Family Fun Morning Tuesday morning 5th April saw over 60 parents and children enjoying fun, games, face painting, drumming, arts and crafts at the Innisfail Community Support Centre. This was the Centre s school holiday offering, this time with an Easter theme. The event was coordinated by Centre staff and supported by other services. Goodstart Early Learning staff were in great demand for their face painting skills. Two Babinda State School Indigenous Leaders of Tomorrow Seniors came along and ran outdoor games and other novelty events. Morning tea was served and a sausage sizzle was cooked by Police Liaison Officer, Stacey. The Easter bunny arrived during the morning with a basket of eggs to share, which thrilled children and adults alike as they posed to have their photo taken with him. Many thanks to all that made this morning a huge success.

6 Talkabout April / May 6 LAUGHTER IS THE BEST MEDICINE Humour is infectious. Humour and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humour lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. With so much power to heal and renew, the ability to laugh easily and frequently is a tremendous resource for surmounting problems, enhancing your relationships, and supporting both physical and emotional health. Laughter is good for your health Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body s natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems. Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease. Positive psychology identifies the capacity for laughter and a sense of humour to be one of the main strengths we can possess. You can get laughter in your life in the following ways - TV and movies: There s no shortage of laughter opportunities from the entertainment, both at the theatre and in the aisles of the video store, as well as at home with TV. Laugh with friends: Having friends over for a get-together or game night is a great opportunity for laughter and good feelings. Find humour in your life: Instead of complaining about life s frustrations, try to laugh about them. Some things may not feel funny at the time, but later you may look on them and laugh. Fake it until you make it : Studies show that positive benefits come from smiling, whether it is real or faked. The same applies to laughter. So smile more and fake laughter, and you will still achieve the same physical effects, leading to the real thing.
