BAYER STRATEGIC CONSULTING Guide to Effective Public Speaking 6 Public Speaking Tips for Conquering Your Fear and Captivating Your Audience

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 2 What do Raiders of the Lost Ark and public speaking have in common? In Raiders of the Lost Ark, there s only one thing that terrifies the unflappable Indiana Jones: snakes. He hates snakes. It turns out, according to a Gallup poll the two greatest fears people have are snakes and public speaking. That s right: public speaking. Why? Speaking in front of a group can be hard. It can make you feel vulnerable. Exposed. Judged. You re taking a risk. What if they don t like me? Worse, what if I embarrass myself? These are understandable and uncomfortable - emotions. In fact, throughout our daily lives, we may spend energy trying to avoid these very feelings. Can public speaking tips help overcome these fears? Yes, they can. Mastering a few key speaking tips will help you conquer the negative feelings that can sabotage your ability to speak up. How? The key to conquering the fear of public speaking is learning and practicing the techniques that skilled speakers use. When you adopt and use these speaking techniques, you ll become a much better and more confident and comfortable public speaker. And as you improve your performance, the dread you feel about public speaking will begin to lift. That s because we don t tend to fear or avoid things we re good at. In fact, the opposite is true - we embrace them. We look for opportunities to demonstrate our strengths and abilities.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 3 Over the years, I ve seen which speaking techniques work and which don t. I ve given many speeches in my professional and personal life. Working in the U.S. Congress for almost two decades, I ve also heard more than my share of speeches, statements, roasts and related public presentations. Over the years, I ve seen which speaking techniques work and which don t. Based on my experience, I ve put together 6 Public Speaking Tips for Conquering Your Fear of Public Speaking in 2016 My goal is to help you overcome your fear of public speaking (no guarantees on the snakes sorry!) These public speaking tips can make you more sure of yourself as a public speaker, whether you re giving a best man speech, a sales pitch, a eulogy or just standing up in a meeting to make a point. So here we go.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 4 PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP #1: Banish the idea you re just one of those people who s not a good public speaker. This may seem obvious, but sometimes we psyche ourselves out of trying things beyond our comfort zone. Changing your mindset is an absolutely essential first step to improving your public speaking ability. Few if any of us are naturally talented public speakers. It takes some work. The truth is many great orators initially faced significant obstacles, including fear and physical challenges. But they overcame them to become expert public speakers. Steve Jobs The confident, relaxed One more thing Apple CEO striding effortlessly around the stage didn t start out that way. See how nervous he was before his first T.V. interview How did he go from I m ready to throw up at any moment to an incontrol presenter? John F. Kennedy When he started out in politics, JFK was considered a dull and wooden public speaker who spoke in a somewhat scratchy and tensely high-pitched voice, according to Kennedy biographer Robert Dallek. That s a long way from Ask not what your country can do for you...! Winston Churchill His masterful, stirring speeches during World War II are some of the most powerful in history, but the British Prime Minister did not begin as a gifted public speaker. He actually had a speech impediment - a lisp and he spent a lot of time and effort trying to find its cause and cure.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 5 PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP #2: Be authentic. What does that mean? Essentially, it means be genuine or real. Share with the audience what you re really feeling. If you re nervous, you could acknowledge it as you start your speech. If you re passionate about your topic, let the audience sense your enthusiasm not in a manufactured way, but naturally, in the course of your talk. Speaking coach and author Nick Morgan has an excellent piece in Harvard Business Review about the importance of being an authentic speaker. You can see the power of authenticity on full display in this year s presidential campaigns. When asked why they re supporting their favored candidate, many voters often cite authenticity - they tell it like it is ; they re a straight talker ; you know where they stand on the issues. In short, they re authentic.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 6 PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP #3: Know your audience. When you stand up to deliver a best man s speech, for example, your buddy s parents and newly-minted in-laws will be listening. There may even be a 89-yearold grandma or two in the audience and young children. Avoid cringeworthy mistakes like off-color jokes or references to the groom s past relationships. Remember, this audience is starkly different from the group at the bachelor party tailor your remarks accordingly. And as you set out to write your speech, ask yourself how you want to make the audience feel as they listen to you: Comforted by happy memories after the death of a loved one? Revved up and ready to go hit their sales targets? Informed and impressed by your expertise on a particular subject? Before you even put a word on the page, identify what you want the audience to take away from your talk. That will help you determine the right content to include.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 7 PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP #4: Use humor (when appropriate.) Humor can be an effective public speaking technique, as long as you stick to jokes/observations appropriate for your audience, per Tip #3 above. A joke that pokes fun at yourself also can work on two levels - it s funny and boosts your authenticity, per Tip #2. A joke or brief funny story or observation can be a good way to lead in to your speech. It loosens up the audience. A well-received joke can also help relax you and build your confidence. Caution: Remember humor isn t suitable for every setting; it can be risky, so make sure you re 100 percent confident the joke is truly funny (not just to you). Test it out on friends familiar with the audience you re addressing.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 8 PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP #5: Structure your speech - no one wants to listen to a rambling, disorganized talk. Make sure your speech has 3 defined sections: A beginning/introduction, possibly including a suitable joke (when appropriate) A middle in which you provide more detail or evidence to support the point(s) you made in your introduction And an end/conclusion in which you revisit your beginning and tie the speech together, possibly with comments about what the future may hold for your topic (when appropriate) This is a bare-bones outline that you may want to add to (inserting subsections for separate topics in the middle portion, for example). Still, the overall point here is that you ll want to have an organized roadmap for your remarks that is easy for the audience to follow. In more formal settings like a business presentation or academic talk, effective speakers will sometimes tell/ show the audience this roadmap in the introduction: First, I m going to talk about X and then I ll address Y. In my conclusion I ll provide a glimpse of what we may see in the future from X and Y. This technique is not necessary and feels out of place in more informal circumstances, but the overall point remains: Have an organized structure.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 9 PUBLIC SPEAKING TIP #6: Practice makes perfect. There is no substitute for practice. Here s one reason: As you speak, you want to make eye contact with members of the audience. It helps establish a connection with the group you re addressing. That connection is a vital technique used by effective speakers. You should repeatedly practice your speech and refine it so you are familiar enough with its contents to avoid simply reading it to the audience on the big day. You don t have to memorize your speech word-forword. But if you can boil it down to one page of bullet points/topic headers to prompt you as you speak, that will enable you to engage with the audience while only periodically glancing at your notes. As you get closer to the delivery date, try to practice under game day conditions. Find a friend (or even a pet) you can deliver your speech to. Here s another reason to practice: The more at ease and familiar you are with the text and your delivery beforehand, the less nervous you ll be when you actually give your speech.

GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING 10 The Bottom Line. You can overcome your fear of public speaking. Many effective speakers started out just as you may feel right now - nervous, uncomfortable and convinced they were cursed with the inability to speak effectively to groups. Learn and practice the public speaking tips above. Your performance will improve, and your anxiety about public speaking will begin to melt away. Over time, as you master these speaking techniques, you may actually start to look forward to public speaking opportunities. Good luck you can do it! Interested in a FREE Consultation?
