GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Participial Phrases (5-6 minutes) Participial phrases are made of a present participle (VERB-ing) or past participle (VERB-ed or VERB-en) plus any modifiers that complete the idea. These phrases serve as adjectives or adverbs within a sentence and usually need to come next to the words they describe. Example: Running down the airport corridor, Diane tripped and fell. In the sentence above, Running down the airport corridor is the participial phrase. TRIPPED is the verb or action that took place, while RUNNING describes what was being done on the AIRPORT CORRIDOR when the actual action happened. There are two basic types of participial phrases: 1. Present Participial Phrase usually uses the -ing form of a verb within it Example: Running with his heavy luggage to the next exit, the man starts to hunt for the next cab. 2. Past Participial Phrase usually uses an -ed or -en form of a verb within it Example: The lost boy cried, scared that his mother may never find him in the sea of people at the airport. 3

4 Remember: The participial phrase uses an ing, or en and -ed form of a verb. However, this phrase does not provide the action being performed in the sentence. Instead, it is used to describe the action or the state of being of the doer of the action when the action happened. Examples: Present Participial Phrase Beginning Waiting for a late flight, Jane falls asleep at the passenger area. Ending The airport security personnel checks every single luggage carefully, thinking he will find a dangerous object inside. Past Participial Phrase Beginning Caught in the crowd of people leaving the train station, Sara waved her arms to get the attention of her waiting husband. Ending The man at the counter gave the passenger first class tickets requested by the persistent passenger. Comprehension Check: In the sentence Handing the flight attendant her ticket, Alice entered the aircraft slowly, what is the participial phrase and what is the action that took place? 4
