2 When two words combine, dropping one or more of their letters and adding an apostrophe ( ), they form a contraction. Examples: Sentence without contraction: I do not want to watch television. Sentence with contraction: I don t want to watch television. In the examples, the words do and not combined, dropping the letter o and adding an apostrophe ( ) to create the contraction don t.
3 Most sentences are written in the active voice with the subject at the beginning. Example: People grow soybeans. However, sometimes sentences are written in the passive voice with the object of an action at the beginning and the subject (when included) at the end. Notice the verb be as helping verb and the main verb, grow grow, in past participle form. Example: Soybeans are grown by people. The passive voice is preferred when the object of the action in a sentence is more important than the subject. Many times, the subject is not even included. Example: Soybeans are the most widely grown legumes in the world.
4 All sentences start with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark such as a period, question mark, or exclamation point. Examples: People need to protect against serious diseases. Were you immunized against polio as a child? Congratulations on your new shoes!
