3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. A branch manager and his assistant are shopping for the things that they need for their new business branch. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Types of Pronouns Demonstrative Pronouns (5-6 minutes) Demonstrative Pronouns represent a thing or things: Near in distance or time ( this, these ) Far in distance or time ( that, those ) Ex: This is a nice dress. (near from you) That is a nice dress. (far form you) These are nice dresses. (near from you) Those are nice dresses. (far from you) near far Singular this that Plural these those Remember: Do not combine demonstrative pronouns with demonstrative adjectives. They are the same, yet a demonstrative pronoun stands by itself, while a demonstrative adjective qualifies a noun. Examples: That is a book. (Demonstrative pronoun) That book is hers. (Demonstrative adjective) We can also use demonstrative pronouns for identifying people. Ex: This is Maria. Is that your cousin? Comprehension Check: Can you identify the things which can be found in your room using demonstrative pronouns? 4
