The impact of Love
Journal What kinds of love are there? What kind of love did Jim and Della have in The Gift of the Magi? How did this love affect their relationship? What kind of love did Romeo and Juliet have in Romeo and Juliet? How did this love affect their relationship?
Literary Analysis Outline Prompt: As the selections you have read in this unit show, love can be ennobling or it can turn into an obsession. Whatever the end result, it is often a defining force in the human experience, and people who experience it are often changed forever. Choose two selections from this unit and think about the main character or the narrator in each one. What sort of impact does falling in love have on them? Is the experience a transformative one or is it ultimately destructive? Write a literary analysis outline that shows how falling in love can change people for better or sometimes for worse.
Outline format I. Thesis II. Topic Sentence (The Gift of the Magi) III. A. B/E -For example (Quote from the text to prove your TS) B. B/E - Furthermore (Quote from the text to prove your TS) Topic Sentence (Romeo and Juliet) A. B/E - For instance (Quote from the text to prove your TS) B. B/E - In addition (Quote from the text to prove your TS)
Thesis statement and Topic Sentences Answer the question of the prompt: What sort of impact does falling in love have on the character(s) in the two stories? Is the experience a transformative one or is it ultimately destructive? Guiding questions to ask yourself: What impact did falling in love have on Romeo and Juliet? What effect did love have on Jim and Della? Think about how you can describe the kind of love each couple had. Was it romantic? Passionate? Compassionate? Selfless? Selfish? Familial? Casual and uncommitted? Practical? Did the couples have a similar or different kind of love?
Thesis Statement and Topic Sentences Create first Topic Sentence: What kind of love did Jim and Della have, and ultimately, what effect did it have on them? Ex: In, by, the characters (list names) (describe their love/relationship) that eventually leads to. Create second Topic Sentence: What kind of love did Romeo and Juliet have, and ultimately, what effect did it have on them? Ex: Similarly/However in by, the protagonists _(list names) (describe their love/relationship that ultimately results in. Create your Thesis: What can you say about the effects of love on people? (Did both couples experience the same effect? If not, mention the opposite effects that love can have.)
After the Nurse and Lady Capulet leave, Juliet says: I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins, That almost freezes up the heat of life: I ll call them back again to comfort me. Nurse! What should she do here? (IV.iii.15-18) Selecting evidence Chose TWO quotations from each text to support your Topic Sentences. Which quotes best exemplifies the impact of love? Is it something that was said or done? Be sure to lead into the quote with significant background: who said it, what was going on at the time or what had just happened, to whom are they speaking? Quoting Magi: After the quote, put the author s name and the page number (O Henry 37). Quoting Shakespeare: When quoting Shakespeare, you will put the Act, Scene, and Line numbers in parenthetical notation. (III.iv.9-10) means Act 3 Scene 4 lines If the quote is 3 lines or shorter, you need to indicate the line breaks with a forward slash (/). If the quote is longer than 3 lines, you should use a block quotation. To do so, indent the lines twice to offset them from the rest of the paragraph. Note: in block quotations, quotation marks are not necessary. Example: After the Nurse and Lady Capulet leave, Juliet says, I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins,/ That almost freezes up the heat of life: / I ll call them back again to comfort me (IV.iii.15-17).
