1 English Stills from our new series Know Your Poetry What is poetry all about? How can we make sense of it? What are the main poetic forms? This comprehensive series helps students to boost their poetry knowledge and appreciation in a light-hearted and user-friendly manner. Dedications Poems can be almost as tasty as cheese. Almost. Discover why in this entertaining and fact-filled introduction to understanding the purpose, tone and structure of poetic dedications. With an emphasis on various types of ode and a close analysis of a classic elegy, this celebration of dedications will engage and equip students embarking on a poetry study. ACELT1621, ACELT1620, ACELT1637, ACELT1640 and more! min UK AR PLUS Order and Disorder Macbeth Macbeth is a spooky horror story set in Scotland. There are gory bits. There are witches and spooky visions. Macbeth and his wife commit so many horrible crimes that towards the end even Lady Macbeth goes mad with the horror of it all. Explore how the themes of fate, ambition, and appearance and reality affect characters and influence the story. Fate Ambition ClickView
5 Much Ado About Nothing Much Ado About Nothing is a comedy set in Italy. It s about men and women, love, pretence and disguises. It s about how hatred can turn so easily into love, and love so easily into hatred. There s a villain that messes it all up for everybody, but like all good stories, the heroes win through in the end. Despite claiming to be about nothing, the themes covered in Much Ado About Nothing - love, conflict, and appearance and reality - are serious and complex even though the play is a comedy. Conflict Richard III Richard III is a play about evil, violence and murder. It charts the rise of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, a cold-blooded and dastardly villain who slaughters his family and even marries his victim s widow to become king. Explore the main themes of leadership, family and fate looking at how they affect characters and influence the story. Leadership Family and Blood Ties Fate min UK AR PLUS Romeo and Juliet If you ve heard of Romeo and Juliet, you ll probably know that it is a play about love. It s not all soppy nonsense though there s a good dose of duels, secret plots and tragic deaths too. The teenaged children of two warring families, Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love. The play tells the story of their doomed attempts to be together. The most obvious theme in Romeo and Juliet is that of love, but Shakespeare invites us to also examine the importance of fate, death, honour, friendship and duality. Fate Duality ClickView
6 The Merchant of Venice The Merchant of Venice is a clever and controversial comedy. Bassanio, needs money to woo the beautiful heiress Portia. He asks his friend Antonio for a loan, but Antonio has invested his funds in ships overseas. The moneylender, Shylock, offers the cash on the condition that he will take a pound of Antonio s flesh if the loan is not repaid within three months. Explore the main themes of love, justice and money looking at how they affect characters and influence the story. Money Justice The Tempest The Tempest is a play about magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness. Prospero, a powerful magician, creates a storm, or tempest, that sets the scene for the play. There we see a plot to murder the King of Naples, a drunken scheme to kill Prospero and a romance between Miranda and the King s son, Ferdinand. Explore the main themes of empathy and forgiveness, freedom and nature versus nurture looking at how they affect characters and influence the story. Empathy and Forgiveness Freedom Nature versus Nurture min UK AR PLUS Twelfth Night Twelfth Night is a fast-paced romantic comedy with several interwoven plots of romance, mistaken identities and practical jokes. There s cross dressing, drunken pranks and a great deal of confusion, chaos and comedy. Even though it is a comedy, based on a day of partying, Twelfth Night still deals with some serious themes. Romantic love, family love and even the love of love are all presented, as is the question of appearance and reality. The foolishness of ambition is also prominently on display.
