Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: (20 Marks) By the time our delayed train reached and I disembarked with my father & baby Lavnya, it was well past midnight. It was cold, dark and foggy. My husband, Manas, who was to receive us, was nowhere in sight. Soon the platform became deserted. Then, a burly man approached us and offered to carry our bags. He wasn't wearing the usual porter's red shirt and tag, and though I was not interested, my father decided to hire him. Leaving Lavanya and me with the man, my father went to look for Manas. I took a closer look at the man and felt fearful. He was big and hairy and his eyes looked; bloodshot. Just then Lavanya awoke, and turned to look at the porter. He gave her a playful smile and held out his arms. I thought she'd start crying but she smiled back and twisted herself out of my arms into his. Now I was really scared. What if he ran away with my baby? He must have sensed my fear so handed her back to me. His eyes had tears in them. At that moment my father returned with Manas. The man picked up our bags and put them in the car, the man refused to take payment from us. He placed his hand on Lavanya's head for a moment and walked away. Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: Trees are useful to us in many ways. They give us cool shade; they give us fruit to eat and firewood to burn. They give us timber to build houses with the various items of furniture. They also give us paper on which our books are printed. SA1/SCI/6 Page 1

2 But more important than all this, is that, they supply the atmosphere with oxygen which is essential to life. Here by trees we mean all the vegetation including grass, shrubs, creepers etc. When we and 'the animals breathe we give out carbon dioxide. Green plants absorb this carbon dioxide and with the help of sunlight turn it into carbon and oxygen. Carbon is used to make starch and oxygen is released into the atmosphere. Without oxygen all the animals would die. But most important of all, trees help to protect the surface soil of the earth and prevent floods. Our Earth has a covering of fine soil on the surface and this covering takes millions of years to be formed. But sometimes a single heavy shower washes away much of this valuable soil on an open hill slope. This does not happen in forests or other places where there are plenty of trees. The trees stop the free flow of water and their roots hold the soil together, and thus the soil is protected from being washed away. Moreover, forest soil quickly absorbs rain water and thus helps to prevent sudden floods. 1. What is the most important thing that.the trees give us?
