1 Literary Term Cards: You are required to make a set of flashcards to help you learn literary terms and story elements. Your cards should meet the requirements outlined below: 1. Print out cards. Cut them out and paste them together. You can fold them in half. 2. Must have one example for each term. We will be doing this in class, and the project is also on our classes (Ms. Whitesides ) blog. a. Example must have detail and MLA internal citation. (Last name of author). b. EC is given for detailed illustration given on front of card where term is located. i. Must have color and detail. No stick figures. Go to Google images or Bing, just have parent approval if you use images from web or example given on blog. Literary Term List Name: Ms. Whitesides English: Period 01 December IRONY 2. SITUATIONAL IRONY 3. VERBAL IRONY (Only One Each Card) Definition: The contrast between expectation and reality. Irony can create humor or strong emotion. _ Definition: Occurs when what happens is very different from what we expect to happen. _ Definition: When what is said or written is different from what is meant. Often using dialogue to show it. _ 4. DRAMATIC IRONY Definition: When the audience or reader knows something the characters do not know. _

STOCK CHARACTER Definition: A personal or animal in a story, play, or poem. _ Definition: The main character in a work of literature who is involved in the central conflict and forward (pro) the plot all along. _ Definition: The character who opposes the main character and puts the conflict or plot in motion. _ Definition: A character who changes as a result of the story's events. _ Definition: A character who does not change over the course of a story. _ Definition: An over-simplified character that lacks dimension. _
3 10. PERSONIFICATION Definition: When an object is brought to life and given human characteristics. _ Definition: The vantage point from which a story is told. 11. POINT OF VIEW 12. FIRST PERSON NARRATOR 13. THIRD PERSON NARRATOR 14. OMNISCIENT 15. DIALECT _ Definition: One of the characters is telling the story using the personal pronoun "I." _ Definition: The narrator focuses on thoughts and feelings of just one character. Uses third person pronouns such as "he" and "she." _ Definition: The narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters and understands their pasts. _ Definition: A way of speaking characteristic of a certain geographical area or a certain group of people. Includes both accent and word choices. _
4 16. THEME 17. Setting 18. FORESHADOWING 19. MOOD 20. PLOT 21. EXPOSITION Definition: The general idea or insight about life that a work of literature reveals. It is more than a subject in a work. Themes are the messages about a subject that a writer wishes to convey. _ Definition: The time and place of a story, play, or narrative poem. It is usually described at the beginning of the work in the exposition. _ Definition: The use of clues or events suggesting events that will occur later in the plot. _ Definition: The overall feeling of a work of literature. Can be happy, sad, scary, horrific, etc. _ Definition: The series of related events that make up a story. _ Definition: The introduction of a story that introduces the setting, (time and place) and the characters. _
5 22. FLASHBACK Definition: Interruption in the present action of a plot to flash backward and tell what happened at an earlier time. This often has a trigger using the senses as a cue. _ A struggle between opposing characters or forces INTERNAL 25. EXTERNAL 26. MAN VS. MAN 27. MAN VS. NATURE _ Definition: A struggle within a single character. It is a struggle between opposing needs, desires, or emotions. _ Definition: A character struggles with an outside force which may be another character, society as a whole, or a natural or man-made force. _ Definition: One character struggles against another character. _ Definition: One character struggles against the elements or forces of nature. _

RESOLUTION Definition: A character struggles against the rules or norms of society. _ Definition: A character struggles against technology. _ Definition: The most exciting moment in the story when the outcome is decided one way or another. _ Definition: The emotion given to a specific passage or character by the author. _ Definition: A repetition of sounds in one line. Two or more sounds close together in a line create alliteration. _ Definition: When the story's problems are solved and the story ends. _

Iambic Pentameter Definition: A brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary, or political significance. _ Definition: This is caused by the repetition of vowel sounds within sentences, phrases, or in poems. _ Definition: The repetition of consonant sounds within sentences, phrases, or in poems. _ Definition: This is a poetic meter that has three anapestic metrical feet per line. Each foot has two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable. _ Definition: A foot is an iamb if it consists of one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable, so the word remark is an iamb. Pent means five, so a line of iambic pentameter consists of five iambs. *******Always Shakespearean sonnets! _
8 4= 100% For it to be considered a 4, it must be 100 % complete and absolutely top notch. In fact, it is so good that I am actually surprised and very pleased. This shows extraordinary excellence and understanding! This is above and beyond. Heck yesss. 3=90% For it to be considered a 3, it must be 90 % complete and... gosh, golly, darn. It s pretty good. It really accomplished and/or showed what it is supposed to accomplish/show. This shows proficiency. This is spot on target. 2= 80% For it to be considered a 2 it must be 80 % complete and... Gee, this attempt has some reasonable direction to it, but it just doesn t cut the mustard. This shows that you re still reaching, but you re getting there. 1= 70% For it to be considered a level 1, it must be 70 % complete and... What is this? The person who did this did something, and there is some sense to it, but not much. I ordered a taco, and you gave me a lovely quiche. This shows the beginnings of understanding and achievement, but there is still a lot of room for improvement and growth. 0 For it to be considered a level 0, it must be less than 70 % complete and... you re kidding, right? I m not really even sure how to score this. There is either too little here or it is completely off the mark. Cut above and keep for turn in. Self-Assessment on Flashcard Examples. Name.
