3 UNIT 1 PREFIXES IR-, IM-, RE- IRRESISTIBLE ir-, im-, re- A. Do you know any words starting with the prefixes ir-, im- or re-? Read the speech bubbles below and underline the ir-, im- or re- words. Those nasty masters took our home again! When we thought they were gone forever, but they reappeared. We must reconsider our options to serve the masters. We must retake back our homes. We thought the masters were dead, but they are immortal. They are impolite and have taken all our stuff! It s improper behaviour. We are irresistible for the masters. They need us for their big bad plans so it would be irrational to send us away. We can t be irresponsible! We must prove that we are worthy to the masters again. 2

6 UNIT 2 PREFIXES IN-, IL- INCREDIBLE in-, il- A. Read the story below and underline the words starting with the prefixes in- and il-. George and Harold are very imaginative students. They decide to make a new superhero that is incredible so, they created Captain Underpants. He seemed so illogical, running around in his underpants with his super Wedgie Power! Meanwhile, Mr Krupp, the mean principal was intolerant of the boys behaviour. He found George s illegible notes and decided that George and Harold were up to something. Mr Krupp followed the boys and found them with the illegal hypnotising ring. Then, George and Harold accidentally hypnotise their mean school principal to think that he is Captain Underpants. Now their mean principal is the world s most underdressed and inappropriate superhero. 5

7 UNIT 2 PREFIXES IN-, IL- B. Write down the words you have underlined in the zap bubbles and match them with their definitions. 10 UNIT 3 PREFIXES A-, UN- MEET ATYPICAL & UNUSUAL a-, un- A. Read the dialog between Phineas and Ferb and underline the words starting with the prefixes un- and a-. I was so worried when they tied me up. I am so glad you came to untie and save me! I was unable to come sooner because I was trapped in another dimension. It must have been very uncomfortable waiting for me. I thought that you would not be able to make it back. I was so unhappy. It was such an unusual dimension; everything seemed to be asymmetrical so it took me time to figure out the exit. That is an atypical experience! We should check that out. I would rather call it unsatisfactory and boring. 9

11 UNIT 3 PREFIXES A-, UN- When you put the prefixes a- or un- at the beginning of a word, they add a meaning to the word. The prefixes a- and un- have a similar meaning. They mean. B. Note down the 8 words that you have underlined in part A. C. Fill in the blanks using the correct word from part B. Isabella her ribbon to take off her headband. The tiny chair was very to sit on for Buford. Katie was to afford the trip. This is behaviour for Perry he is never like this. Candace is when Jeremy does not call her. Ferb paints over shapes because he does not like how they look. Little Suzy thinks her brother is because he does not do everything she wants him to do. Perry the Platypus is an animal because he is also a secret agent. 10

12 UNIT 3 PREFIXES A-, UN- D. Choose 3 words with a- or un- prefix and write your own sentence. Do not forget to state the part of speech (noun, verb or adjective). Part of speech E. Use at least 5 of the words from Section B to write about your own bad day. Make sure you underline each word you use. It was a very unusual day for me. 11

14 UNIT 4 PREFIX ANTI- IS JUDY HOPPS REALLY AN ANTIHERO? anti- A. Read the passage below and underline the words starting with the prefix anti-. When I was a kid, I thought Zootopia was a perfect place where everyone got along and anyone could do whatever he or she wanted. Turns out life is more complicated than a slogan on a bumper sticker. Real life is messy. I did not choose to write parking tickets or to be fining smokers in the antismoking zones. We all have our limitations and we make mistakes. The clock seems to be ticking anticlockwise. My colleagues say that I am not fit to be a police officer. I am not an antihero or as antisocial as they say. I am just trying to adjust. I am the first rabbit in the police force. Ah, I need to go and collect my antibiotics. Bye now! B. Write down all the words you have underlined in part B. 13

16 UNIT 4 PREFIX DIS, DE- MAKE A DETOUR WITH dis-,de- A. Read the passage below and underline the words starting with the prefix dis-, de-. Hi, I am the Baby Boss. You would not believe it but my own brother has deceived me! I am very disappointed in him. Turns out, he disagrees with my ways but his disapproval means nothing to me! I will not let my parents deprive me of the luxuries I have earned myself. I worked hard to generate my business and no one will stand in my way. I have figured out a detour route to my office and it is cheaper, so the deduction in my pocket money is not an obstacle anymore. I will get you back for this Tim, you just wait! B. 18 UNIT 5 IDIOMS What are idioms, eh? Well, they are phrases or expressions that means something different from its actual meaning. So, are you ready to figure out what idioms really mean? A. Look at the underlined phrases in the speech bubbles and try to understand what they actually mean. Did you find the English homework hard? The English homework was a piece of cake. Your teacher told me you did not turn it in. Remember you should always speak your mind! I was going to give in my homework yesterday but it totally slipped my mind. B.
