8 Review Exam Romeo and Juliet Quotations Format of quotation questions You will have to write in full sentences about 2 out of 3 quotations. If you write about more quotations, only your first 2 answers will be marked. To prepare for this part of the exam, as part of each answer, you will have to identify and explain the effectiveness of a literary device that Shakespeare uses in the quotation. Therefore, you should make sure you can identify the following literary devices : Simile Oxymoron Pun Metaphor Alliteration Double entendre Personification Imagery Symbolism Allusion Rhyme Irony and dramatic irony Hyperbole Onomatopoeia Foreshadowing N.B. This list of literary devices will not appear on the exam. Example of a quotation question: Quotation A Tybalt: What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word As I hate hell, all Montagues and thee. Question: How does this quotation illustrate Tybalt s character? (2 marks) Answer: Tybalt s aggressive nature is immediately established when he first appears in the play. He rejects Benvolio s attempts to prevent a street brawl and restarts the riot. Question: Identify one literary device in this quotation and underline the part of the quotation where this device occurs. (1 mark) Answer: Question: Answer: Alliteration. The words hate and hell should be underlined (Note: this answer does not have to be a full sentence). Explain why this literary device is effective. (2 marks) Tybalt s use of alliteration adds emphasis to his hostile words.
