The Hungry Giant s Shoe
The Hungry Giant was in a bad mood. He hopped on one foot and yelled, I can t find my new red shoe. Little people! Find my shoe for me! 2
3
Yes, yes, Hungry Giant, the people replied, and they ran into the giant s house. 4
They looked and looked for the shoe. No. It was not in the giant s house. 5
6
Find my new red shoe! roared the giant. The people put their hands over their ears and ran back to town. The giant s roar came after them. Find my shoe! Find my shoe! Yes, Hungry Giant! they cried. We will find your shoe! 7
What a lot of fuss! What a lot of running! The people looked in every street. They looked in every shop. 8
They looked in every house. But they did not find the giant s shoe. 9
10
The people said, Oh bother! We told the giant we d find his shoe! What will we do? 11
Some children came down the river in a beautiful boat. What are you looking for? they said. 12
The people replied, The Hungry Giant has lost his new red shoe. The children looked at their boat. It was big and red and new. Oh-oh! the children said. 13
The people took the shoe to the Hungry Giant. Here it is! they said. The giant was very happy. My shoe! he cried. My lovely new red shoe! 14
15
But soon the giant s bad mood came back. He roared and roared. I ve got a wet foot! 16
The Hungry Giant s Shoe Features of the text: Punctuation: speech marks, exclamation marks, question marks Declamatory statements Question/answer patterns Repeated refrain with some changes Humour Before Reading Ask the children to tell you about what they do when they get in a bad mood about losing something. Ask, How do you stop being in a bad mood? Introduce the text: The Hungry Giant s Shoe. Look at the cover and title page. What clues do they give about the story? Reading the Text Ask the children to read the text quietly. Give them something specific to focus on. For example, Read the book to find out what the giant did to find his shoe? If necessary, guide the children s reading of one or two pages, then encourage them to read on quietly. After Reading Focus on the synonyms for said (yelled, replied, cried, roared). Where did the people look for the giant s shoe? Look at page 13. What made the children look at their boat? Look at page 16. Why do you think the giant s foot was wet? Discuss the use of speech marks, exclamation marks, and bold text on page 7. Focus on high frequency words, for example, people, can t, said, house, back, after, find, every. Ask, Why do you think the author chose to turn the giant s shoe into a boat? Making meaning: making personal connections, prediction Analyzing the text: visual literacy Children may draw upon all four practices during the reading of the text. Help individual children as necessary. Using the text: considering how words are used (vocabulary) Making meaning: recall, inference, fluency practice Cracking the code: punctuation, emphasis Analyzing the text: recognizing the author s role in creating the text
