3 Page # Subject EXPLORE! 13 Grammar Ain t is considered improper speech or slang. It should not be used unless it s part of a quotation, a joke, or a well-known saying. 14 Vocabulary The tarmac is an area of an airport where planes park or maneuver. 17 Food Hushpuppies are deep-fried balls of cornbread that are very popular in the South (and quite delicious!). 18 Figure of 19 Figure of When you say good riddance to someone or something, you are saying you are glad to be rid of that person or thing. Papa is using a figure of speech called hyperbole when he says, I m so hungry I could eat my cowboy hat. Hyperbole uses exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally. 20 Recreation It is believed that the term Frisbee came from pie plates made by the Frisbie Pie Company in Connecticut. Once the pie was eaten, people started tossing the pie plates around for fun and the rest is history! 21 Geography Manteo sits on Shallowbag Bay on the eastern side of Roanoke Island. In its early days, every store on the waterfront had two doors one for those arriving by boat, and one for those arriving on dry land! 23 Vocabulary An afghan is a blanket knitted or crocheted in strips or squares. 24 Exploration A reconnaissance party scouts or explores an area ahead of an army or other group in order to gain information. 24 Figure of Papa uses hyperbole when he talks about mosquitoes the size of dinner plates. 4 24 Biography Sir Walter Raleigh was a British aristocrat (member of the ruling class), poet, writer, soldier, and explorer who attempted to establish a colony in the New World. He is also known for introducing tobacco and potatoes to England. 25 Nautical A cross-staff was an early navigation tool used to measure the angle between the north star and the horizon. It later developed into the sextant. 26 Vocabulary A usurper is one who wrongfully or illegally seizes and holds the place of another. 26 Travel Historians say it took about two months to sail from England to America. At best, it was going to take John White four to five months to return with supplies for the starving colony. In reality, he did not return until three years later. 27 History When White returned to the settlement, the houses had been taken down and a palisade had been constructed. One of the palisade posts had the word CROATOAN carved into it. The colonists had agreed on this type of message if they had to leave the area, but they had not carved a Maltese cross as a signal that trouble had caused them to leave. 28 Vocabulary A buckaroo is a young cowboy or cowgirl. 29 Science Most dreams last only 5 to 20 minutes. 31 Building The Elizabeth II was built by hand on the Manteo waterfront with traditional shipbuilding methods and materials. It took about 16 months to build the three-mast, square-rigged vessel. 31 Vocabulary To thrum is to make a rhythmic sound. 37 Writing A preface is a short introductory piece that comes before the main text of a book. Carole Marsh/Gallopade International The Mystery of the Lost Colony TG 5

5 38 Science Yes, it is true that wintergreen Life Savers spark when chewed quickly! This effect occurs when the sugar molecules are crushed and a burst of ultraviolet light is emitted. The light reacts with the wintergreen oil and produces sparks of blue light. Cool, huh?! 38 Word Usage The description of sticky saliva dripping from their front teeth like mad dogs creates a powerful word picture. Can you see it? 39 Figure of Jeremy lay curled like a cold clam is an example of a simile. A simile compares things, events, or actions that are fundamentally unlike. 39 Imagination Do you think attics are spooky? Why or why not? 40 Safety The Mighty Midgetts of Chicamacomico refers to a family who lived along the Outer Banks in the days before the U.S. Life Saving Service was established in They saved the lives of many shipwrecked sailors, and were asked to join the Life Saving Service in its early days. The Life Saving Service eventually evolved into the U.S. Coast Guard. 40 Collectibles Just over 50,000 Lost Colony commemorative pieces were coined in two batches in January and June Body When Jeremy s short blond hairs stood at attention on his arms, what was happening to him? Think of a time when you had goosebumps. What caused your goosebumps? 43 Geography The only ways to get to Ocracoke Island are by ferry, private boat, or private plane. Would you like to live in such an isolated place? 43 Word Usage What is the author trying to say when she writes, his eyes flew to each adult in search of the make-everything-right answers expected of them? 44 Tone of Voice Jeremy s father hissed when talking about savages. What does that tell you about how he is feeling? Carole Marsh/Gallopade International The Mystery of the Lost Colony TG 6
