For childre aged THE BEACH, THE CHILDREN AND THE TURTLE Childre thik about special places, special people ad people, their feeligs ad the wishes they make. Throughout, the term childre refers to those listeig to ad iteractig with the story. The childre i the story text are referred to as Peter ad Aji. Preparatio Dowload pictures of (i this order)... a upopulated beach, a seagull, steps leadig dow a cliff face to a beach, a blue ad yellow blow-up dighy with oars, a foot pump to iflate the dighy, a turtle, a storm, a chocolate cupcake (if possible with a birthday cadle o it). If you thik your childre eed a D represetatio of the beach/settig, details of how to do this are o pages 0 0 ad i Appedices A ad B. Explai that this story is about feeligs, icludig feeligs we might have after someoe has died. To help childre feel safe, certai groud rules eed to be talked about. These are repeated each week. You do t have to share somethig if you feel it is too private. Liste carefully to each other. After someoe dies, some people feel very sad ad other people might ot feel aythig at all. We re all differet ad it is okay ot to feel the same as other people do.

For childre aged EEE EEE 0 EEE EEE Look at a picture of a empty beach o the whiteboard. Ask childre what else could be added to it. Use this to itroduce beach vocabulary, icludig seagulls, cliffs with steps, blue ad yellow dighies with oars ad a foot pump (to iflate the dighy). Read the first part of the story. Peter ad Aji carefully walk dow the steps. The steps lead to their ow little beach which is at the bottom of their garde. Mum is i frot of them, helpig Dad carry a huge cardboard box. Iside the box are two oars, a foot pump ad a yellow ad blue blow-up dighy. The dighy is a preset from Gray. Whe they reach the sad, Dad uses the foot pump to blow air ito the dighy. The he says to Mum, You take the boat out first, with Aji. What are you goig to do while we are o the water? Mum asks. You ll fid out, is all Dad will say. He is plaig somethig, but Mum does ot kow what. Dad ad Peter help Aji ad Mum ito the boat. Gulls swoop ad fly above them as Mum ad Aji pull o the oars to make the frot of the boat cut through the water. Dad ad Peter tur roud ad walk back up the beach towards the cliffs. Let s be busy! Dad says ad Peter starts gigglig. A few miutes later Mum says, Look what Dad ad Peter are doig! Aji looks back towards the beach. Her mouth drops ope. She caot believe what she ca see. Phrases ad cocepts that eed careful wordig or explaatio are writte so they ca be used directly from the script. These are idicated by the word Ask or Say writte o a lie with the questio or commet o the lie below. Ask childre what they thik Dad ad Peter are doig o the beach.

The lessos Back o the beach, Dad ad Peter are paitig a goal post o the cliff face. It is a bright blue goal post. We ve got to go back ad stop them! Mum shouts. They caot do that. But they ca. Ad they have. Do t worry, Dad says, the pait will wear off i a few moths. It wo t be o the cliffs for ever. Mum the starts laughig because the blue goal post lies are all wiggly ad Dad has blue pait o his ose ad o his chi ad o his shorts ad o his figers. Aji starts laughig too. Not i a asty way, but because she kows that the beach ad her family are very, very special. What differet feeligs do the family feel i the story? The beach is Aji ad Peter s favourite place ad they go there with their favourite people. Ask childre to tell their parter where their favourite place is ad who their favourite people are. Share their aswers with the rest of the class ad say how they feel i their favourite place. Childre could draw their favourite place ad the people they like to go there with. If they do this, do t sped more tha five miutes o this activity. Look at pictures of a turtle, a storm ad a chocolate cupcake (if possible with a birthday cadle o it). Read the ext part of the story.

For childre aged EEE EEE 0 EEE EEE Marasova arrives o the beach oe day after a storm. Hello, he says i a croaky voice, I am very pleased to meet you. Peter ad Aji stare at him ad the weird thig is they both uderstad what he says. Where have you come from? Peter asks him. The Big Sea, Marasova says. I came here to shelter from the storm but this beach is a lovely place for a turtle to live. Ca I stay here? Of course he ca! He must have a date for his birthday, Mum says. Ad a chocolate birthday cake, Dad adds. No oe kows whe Marasova s real birthday is. October st is the ext time the childre go to the beach, so they decide that October st will be his birthday. They have a birthday party for him ad wear facy dress. Ask childre what dressig up clothes they would wear if they wet to Marasova s party o the beach. Marasova, how old do you wat to be? Peter asks. Seve, he says. The I am oe year older tha you ad oe year youger tha your sister. Make a wish, Peter says as Marasova blows out the seve cadles o his birthday cake. My shell is grey ad I wish it was bright yellow, he laughs. But my shell will ever chage, because it ca t. Marasova, you re ot meat to tell ayoe what you wish! Aji says. I did t kow that, Marasova says. The he laughs ad thaks the childre for his birthday cake. He has ever had oe before. Neither has the big fat seagull that suddely swoops dow, sticks its beak ito the swirly chocolate sugar icig ad takes off agai with the cake hagig from its beak. Oy! Peter shouts at the seagull. Give that back! But all the seagull does is drop a sticky splat of poo right i frot of Peter s left foot. Stupid seagull, Peter shouts at it, you early hit me. Ask childre what, i the story, could ad could ot happe i real life.

The lessos Marasova does NOT morph ito other thigs or do magic tricks. He talks ad kows about Aji ad Peter s life but is still semi-costraied by physical thigs a turtle ca ad caot do. He also has feeligs. Ask what wishes childre have made whe they have blow out cadles o a birthday cake or at aother time. Have ay of them come true? Ask childre to draw a picture (o whiteboards or paper) of a wish they have made ad, if appropriate, write the wish udereath. Ask childre to tell a parter about the feeligs they felt whe they made the wish. I summary, say, Today we have thought about feeligs ad wishes. Sometimes we feel happy, sometimes sad ad sometimes... say other feeligs metioed durig the lesso. These are feeligs everyoe has ad we are learig about them; eve whe we get older, we will still be learig about them. Wishes are importat too; sometimes they ca come true ad sometimes they ca t. Let childre draw aythig they like from the story so far. This is to give them time to start processig what has bee thought about durig the lesso. FOOTBALL TEAMS, BUILDING SANDCASTLES AND LOSING MARASOVA Childre thik about their respose to thigs they caot cotrol. Oe possible respose is ager. They the thik how they might feel whe someoe importat to them has goe.

For childre aged EEE EEE 0 EEE EEE Preparatio Dowload pictures of... buildig sadcastles, fightig the tide, life jackets ad marker buoys. Add these to last week s pictures. Write the word HAPPY o a piece of paper or whiteboard ad ANGRY o aother. Have felt tipped pes ad more paper or whiteboards ready. Ask childre what they remember from the story last time. Use last week s pictures to jog memories. Revisit the groud rules. You do t have to share somethig if you feel it is too private. Liste carefully to each other. After someoe dies, some people feel very sad ad other people might ot feel aythig at all. We re all differet ad it is okay ot to feel the same as other people do. Say, Today we are thikig about how we might feel whe thigs happe that we caot cotrol such as whe it rais all day. We are also thikig about how we might feel if someoe or somethig that is importat to us goes missig. Look at pictures of childre buildig sadcastles ad fightig the tide. Make sure childre uderstad what these are. Read the ext part of the story. I wish I was better at football, Peter says. If you like, I will help you get better, Marasova says, but ot today because I wat to build a sadcastle ad try ad stop the tide kockig it dow. The sadcastle they build is eormous ad whe it is fiished, Aji ad Peter lift Marasova o top of it. He chuckles ad waggles his legs i the air. Marasova stays there util the tide comes i ad the water starts kockig the sadcastle dow. The he slides ito the water ad swims out to sea; the childre jump o what is left of the castle. As they do, Peter bumps ito Aji. It is a accidet but Aji thiks he did it o purpose. Oy! she shouts at him. Why did you do that? The she pushes him ad he falls over.

The lessos You re little, you re weak, she says. He hates it whe Aji is asty to him ad makes him feel small. I m ot little, he shouts. Oh yes you are, she says. I m ot weak either, he yells. Oh yes you are. Ad you re pathetic. Ad you re probably goig to cry ow as well. Ad Peter hurts iside because his best fried, Ahmed, is really good at football ad is big ad strog. Ahmed is taller ad stroger tha Peter is as well. Suddely Peter hates everybody, especially Aji, ad high above, seagulls squawk ad he thiks they are laughig at him too because he is so small ad useless ad caot do aythig about it. Ask a child to come to the frot ad hold up the word HAPPY. Ask aother to hold up the word ANGRY. Ca childre thik of feeligs words that go i betwee these two? Write each ew feelig o a piece of paper or whiteboard ad ask a child to stad where they thik it would go i the feelig lie. Use this as a opportuity to reiforce that people see thigs differetly. Itroduce some agry words to show there are differet stregths to the emotio, such as... cross, aoyed, sad, upset, miserable. Ask, Like Peter, whe have you really wated to do somethig ad ot bee able to? Which of these feeligs did you have? Not beig i cotrol made Peter agry. How did it make him behave? Ask childre to make agry faces ad the stad up ad make agry poses with their bodies. Ask, How do you help yourself whe you are feelig agry? 0

For childre aged EEE EEE 0 EEE EEE Look at pictures of the dighy (from last week), life jackets ad marker buoys. Read the ext part of the story. Whe the childre take the dighy out o the water, Marasova loves lyig o the frot of it. Behid him, Peter ad Aji sit side by side i their life jackets, oe oar each, rowig towards the orage markers which are as far as they are allowed to row. It is dagerous if they go past the orage markers as they might be swept out ito the Big Sea. Peter turs roud to wave at Marasova. But Marasova is ot there. Where is he? Peter asks. He ll have dropped ito the sea ad goe for a swim, Aji says. But Peter shakes his head. Marasova always lets us kow where he is, Peter says. Has he falle off the boat ad got trapped udereath it? They both look ito the deep swirlig sea. Has he swum out past the orage markers to the Big Sea? Peter asks. I do t kow, Aji says. Should we row out ad have a look? Peter says. No, Aji says straight away. Mum ad Dad have said we must ever go past the orage markers. How strog are Marasova s legs? Peter asks. He ll be all right, Aji says quickly ad is pleased her voice does t show how worried she is. The Peter says, If Marasova is dragged out to the Big Sea, how ca Mum ad Dad fid him agai? Ad all Aji says is, They ca t. The she says, Let s row back to the beach. Marasova s goe, has t he? Peter whispers. He s goe back to the Big Sea. Did he go back because we argued with each other? All Aji says is, I do t kow. The childre drag the dighy oto the beach. We d better tell Mum ad Dad, Aji says. Tell them what? a voice says behid them. Both childre spi roud. A turtle looks up at them with a big gri o his wrikled face. I ve had a great swim, he says.

The lessos But we ve bee so worried, Aji says. We did t kow where you were. I wet for a swim, the turtle says. But suddely the su is shiig ad everyoe is smilig ad Peter s heart stops hurtig. Ask, Have you ever lost somethig ad bee really worried about it? Tell either a parter or the class about it. If childre caot thik of aythig, they ca draw Peter ad Aji whe they realised Marasova was ot i the boat with them. I summary, say, Today we have thought about how thigs happe ad we caot always cotrol them. It might make us feel agry. It could also make us feel scared ad helpless, especially if somethig or someoe who is really importat goes missig. Let childre draw aythig they like from the story so far. This is to give them time to start processig what has bee thought about durig the lesso. SEVEN DAYS AND THEN MARASOVA IS PAINTED Childre thik about gradparets, whe someoe is ill, what might make us feel guilty ad the importace of memories. Preparatio Dowload pictures of home-made biscuits. Fid a picture of a gradparet wearig false teeth. If possible, brig i furiture polish to show the childre.
