Read this folklore story How Anansi the spider got eight thin legs Once upon a time, a long time ago, there lived a rather large spider named Anansi. Although Anansi s wife was a superb cook, Anansi was very greedy and liked to eat the food that others in the village had made for themselves and for their families. One day after supper he stopped by Rabbit s house. Rabbit was his good friend. There are greens in your pot, cried Anansi, sniffing excitedly. Anansi loved greens. They are not quite done, said Rabbit, but stay a while and dine with me. I would love to, Rabbit, but I have some business to attend to, Anansi said hurriedly. If he waited at Rabbit s house, Rabbit would certainly give him all his unwanted jobs to do. Wait! I have an idea, said Anansi. I ll spin a web. I ll tie one end around my leg and one end to your pot. When the greens are done, tug on the web, and I ll come running! Rabbit thought that was a brilliant idea. I smell delicious beans! Anansi sniffed the air hungrily as he ambled along. Come eat our green beans with us, cried the giggling monkeys. They are almost cooked. I would love to Mr Monkey but, said Anansi. Again Anansi suggested that he spin a web, with one end tied around his leg, and one end tied to the big bean pot. Mr and Mrs Monkey and all their children laughed uproariously and thought that was a marvellous idea. I smell sweet potatoes and honey, Anansi remarked suddenly as he sauntered along. Anansi, called his friend Hog, Come and sample my sweet potatoes and honey. I would love to, said Anansi. Well, I think that you know by now what Anansi did!

2 By the time Anansi arrived at the roaring river, he had one web tied to each of his eight legs. This was a wonderful idea, Anansi told himself proudly. I am so clever! I wonder whose pot will be ready first? Tonight I am going to eat to my heart s content. Just then, Anansi felt a tug at his leg. He stumbled. Ouch! he yelled. That is the web string tied to Rabbit s greens. He felt another tug. And another. Anansi was pulled three ways at once and he fell flat on his bulging stomach. He felt the fourth web string pull. Just then, he felt the fifth web string tug, and the sixth, and the seventh and the eighth. Anansi was pulled this way and that way, upside down, sideways and head over heels as everyone pulled on the web strings at once. His legs were pulled thinner and thinner. Anansi felt himself being dragged closer and closer to the raging river. He fell in screaming for help. Fortunately for Anansi the river waters washed all the webs away. Anansi pulled himself painfully up on to the river bank and stared in disbelief and horror at his legs. How could this be! Oh my, oh my, sighed Anansi. Perhaps that was not such a good idea after all. He was exhausted. He never got any food from his eight friends that day at all. To this day, Anansi the Spider has eight extremely thin legs. He had to lose a lot of weight after that experience so that his skinny, stick-like legs could carry him!

What advice do you think Rabbit should have given Anansi when he visited his house? d. How do you think Anansi s wife felt about all of this? e. What might have happened to Anansi if he hadn t fallen into the river? f. Which word does the text use to tell us that Anansi s legs felt sore after this experience? g. Do you think Anansi learned a lesson from this? Give a reason for your answer. h. What would you say is the moral of this story? i. Give antonyms for these words: superb, raging, uproariously 4. Writing (Creative) Write a story in several paragraphs about a bad-tempered spider who lived in the forest. Remember to ask the question words to get ideas for your story (Who? What? Where? When? Which? Why? How?) Give your story an unusual ending. 5. Writing (Transactional) Write a dialogue between two animals. a. Draw a mind map on a piece of paper to plan the story and write down ideas. Draw seven legs on the mind map and write these words on it Who? What? Where? When? Which? Why? How? Think of questions to ask. b. Set your dialogue out in a proper dialogue format.

Tom, you look very smart in your new suit, said Nomsa. Nomsa said that Tom looked very smart in his new suit. f. Ben said, I am sorry but I cannot find your book, Tom. Ben said that he was sorry but he couldn t find Tom s book. g. Suba, put on your jeans when you get home from school, said Mother. Mother told Suba to put on her jeans when she got home from school. h. Nontombeko said, I am feeling dizzy today. Nontombeko said that she was feeling dizzy that day. i. Do your work! the teacher ordered. The teacher ordered them to do their work. j. Vuyo said, When I do my homework, I turn on the radio. Vuyo said that when he does his homework he puts on the radio.
