1 75% pure veracity from the Pamplona Veldts Three truths and a lie Each of the following pages contains three true statements and one whopper. With a little focus and determination, you should be able to figure out which is which. The correct answers will be given next month on the back page of someone else s newsletter. Page 1 1a. Pamplona is currently in the midst of its biggest holiday, the festival of San Fermin. 1b. Up to a million and a half people--perhaps six or seven times the city's population--come for the ten-day party. Activities include concerts, parades, fireworks, lots of alcohol consumption, and the running of the bulls.

2 1c. That's Rex Ryan, the coach of the NFL's New York Jets, who ran with the bulls on Sunday. As dangerous as the bulls are when they're running, it gets worse when they stop. 1d. If you look close, you'll find me in that picture as well. I run with the bulls the first day of the festival every year. I live for the thrill. Page 2

3 2a. Jodi has already set up our English classes for the fall. She s also already prepared many of the materials that she ll use for the year--like the songs she s chosen, put on CD, and written on posters. 2b. We ll have the same number of students (fifty or so), but a larger number of classes; that way, we can accommodate more families. 2c. As always, every single parent is happy with the schedule. 2d. I'll be teaching a couple classes again. Jodi always lets me have the best kids... Page 3

4 3a. In May, Amber graduated from St. John s and Nate from Wheaton-- both summa cum laude. We're very proud.

5 3b. Anna flew in from Seattle for Nate's graduation. Afterwards we went fishing for a few days with my dad up in Michigan. We done good. 3c. The commencement exercises at St. John s were held outdoors. The weather was beautiful and I had a great seat.

6 3d. Amber and I spent an enjoyable week together in New York. Neither one of us was mugged even once. Page 4 4a. It's hard to plan activities in the summer, because so many people go on extended vacations. Nevertheless, we manage to keep busy. 4b. Jodi's ladies' Bible study has turned into a personal Bible study with Cleide, a Brazilian woman. Cleide seems to have had no exposure to the Bible before at all, but she is growing in her understanding of the gospel.

7 Tomás and Santiago 4c. I meet weekly with a couple men from church. But I've also started meeting with three young boys--tomás, Santiago, and David (Cleide's son). I'm trying to help them use their summer vacation well. If I can keep them interested, we'll probably be meeting two or three times each week for games and Bible memory. 4d. I'm a young guy and have just as much energy and patience as I ever had for young boys, so I won't need your prayers or anything. Page 5 Since you last heard from me: 5a. Nick started his summer job, helping out at the day camps of the local equestrian club. He says he's starting to get bow-legged.

8 5b. Amber received a Fulbright Scholarship for the coming school year in Andorra! She's currently in India studying Urdu; when she finishes there in mid- August, she'll fly to Pamplona, and a little later we'll drive her up to Andorra and stay for a couple days with her there. It will be nice having her live relatively closely for nine months or so. 5c. Anna has played a lot of frisbee and climbed a mountain or two.

9 5d. Andrea has memorized the book of Revelation. Page 6 6a. The salmon I'm holding here weighed 47 lbs. and is a Michigan state record. 6b. In my last newsletter I talked about being a little unsettled by some new tax measures aimed at foreigners here in Spain. Since then, I've gotten some good advice from a lawyer friend here and am feeling much better about the situation. Thanks for your prayers. 6c. There's a Domino's Pizza in Pamplona. My favorite pizza--and my favorite pizza name--is covered in meat toppings and is called "pecado carnal." "Pecado carnal" is Spanish for "carnal sin", but it could also be translated "meaty sin." It's clever and kind of funny. You'll have to take my word for it. 6d. Last month we were eating lunch with a visitor from the States who suddenly started waving her hands in the air and saying "Ew! Ew! Ew!" The fuss some people put up over finding a single slug in the salad... ><((((º>. `.. `. ><((((º>
