1 Golden1 Name: Time: Class: Thesis Statements Thesis statements are like movie trailers. Just think about it- When you are watching TV or at the movie theater and a preview comes on, you expect it to be exactly what it is depicting on the screen (you would be kind of upset if you thought you were going to see a romantic comedy and it turned out to be a Horror movie, right?). Review the three movie trailers and record based on the trailer alone what the viewer would think the movie is about.. Movie Trailer #1: What does the trailer insinuate the movie is about? Movie Trailer #2: What does the trailer insinuate the movie is about? Movie Trailer #3: What does the trailer insinuate the movie is about? -4-
2 Golden2 Name: Persuasion Map Step One: Fill out the Appeals first. Think on broad terms when coming up with the Appeals as the reasons/ examples/research will be More specific. Logical Appeal Thesis Statement Ethical Appeal Step Two: Fill out the Research sections. Research the topics stated in the appeals to gain information and statistics to better help your argument. Emotional Appeal Step Three: Fill out the Thesis Statement section. This is to be filled out when you know exactly what your Paper will entail by the evidence you collected in your research. Make sure You put your statement in the order that your essay will be in. -6-

Write them below. Logical Appeal: Ethical Appeal: Emotional Appeal: Now you are going to condense even more what is stated in each of the appeals box. Write as little as possible but still convey what each appeal means. Logical Appeal: Ethical Appeal: Emotional Appeal: Now you are going to create a one-sentence thesis statement using the condensed points you stated above. Please do not use personal pronouns (I, me, we, you, us, our, myself, etc). Create your statement in the following format: State your topic in sentence format followed by because (Example: Abortions should be illegal in all countries because...). State your logical, ethical, and emotional appeals in this order, connected by commas (Example: there are many health risks, doctors don t agree it is safe for the female body, and many women end up having regret after the procedure.). Now put these two sections together to create one sentence on your persuasion map where is says Thesis Statement. -9-
