2 Summary and the Windmills Meet a famous character,, who imagines himself to be a knight of the Middle Ages. In his own foggy but idealistic way, he mistakes windmills for giants and challenges them to a battle. 3 Lesson Vocabulary Conventions Words to Know Knowing the meanings of these words is important to reading and the Windmills. Practice using these words. Vocabulary words lance a long, wooden spear with a sharp iron or steel head misfortune bad luck quests expeditions by knights in search of something renewed made like new again; refreshed, restored renowned famous resound to echo squire a young attendant to a knight Practice Tested Spelling Words Modifiers Words that describe, or tell about, other words are modifiers. Adjectives and adverbs are modifiers. Remember to use modifiers correctly. To avoid confusion, keep your modifiers close to the words they modify. Sometimes misplaced modifiers change the meaning of a sentence. For example: Tim only cooked the meal. Only Tim cooked the meal. Tim cooked only the meal. The placement of the word only in the three example sentences gives each one a different meaning. Activity Misplaced Meanings Write a sentence with a modifier. Ask someone in your family to rewrite the sentence by moving the modifier somewhere else in the sentence. Discuss how the meaning of the sentence has changed. 4 Author s Purpose The author s purpose is the reason or reasons an author has for writing. Authors may write to persuade, inform, entertain, or express ideas. They may have more than one purpose for writing. Directions Read the following passage. Then answer the questions below. Stories from the past can spark the imagination of readers today. Intriguing characters such as Huck Finn, Romeo and Juliet, or Odysseus make stories enjoyable and inspiring. Sometimes humor makes fictional characters charming. But it is more important for characters to seem real. Through characters, readers get involved with the story. These characters can represent a struggle, a yearning, or a relationship for readers to identify with. Their stories help readers to understand their own conflicts or escape their everyday lives. Over the years, imaginative tales have remained popular around the world, and millions of people watch plays and read books each year. 1. What is the author s purpose? 2. What are some things that make characters appealing to readers? 3. What is one reason the author gives for why characters appeal to readers? 4. What evidence does the author provide that shows that stories appeal to readers today? 5. Do you think the author met his or her purpose? Why or why not? Home Activity Your child read a short passage and identified the author s purpose. Together, read a feature article in a newspaper or magazine. Then determine what the author was trying to say, and identify the author s purpose. Evaluate whether the author successfully achieved his or her purpose. Comprehension DVD 309

5 Compare and Contrast Directions Read the following passage. Then answer the questions below. Every windmill is slightly different, but there are three main types: post, smock, and tower windmills. The post windmill, which was developed in the twelfth century, was the earliest type. The tower windmill came next. Then in the seventeenth century, the smock windmill was developed. All three windmills have between four and eight large sails and were built to catch the wind for power. However, they differ in shape. The tower windmill is cylinder-shaped, the post windmill is boxshaped, and the smock windmill is usually octagonal. The windmills also differ in their building materials. Post and smock windmills are made of wooden boards, usually in a horizontal pattern. In contrast, the tower windmill is made of stone or brick. Of all the types, the post windmill is most common. 1. What is being compared and contrasted in this paragraph? 2. What are two ways that all the types of windmills are similar? 3. What is one way that the three types of windmills differ? 4. How do windmills differ in terms of building materials? 5. What question could you use to compare and/or contrast something about the windmills that is not discussed above? Home Activity Your child read a short passage and compared and contrasted details. With your child, make a list of types of buildings. 6 Modifiers Directions Add adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases to these sentences. Use the modifiers to create a more specific, interesting picture. 1. A horse ran. 2. The sun rose. 3.
