Indirect Characterization The author reveals the character through 5 methods of characterization. The reader has to make inferences about the character based on what the author reveals.

13 INDIRECT DIRECT She gently knelt down and stretched out her hand to help her friend return to her feet after her friend fell on the field. She was a kind soul who always helped others. What can we infer about the character?

18 NOTES -Get out a piece of notebook paper and label the top CHARACTERIZATION -Cut out both the hand, the box labeled direct characterization, and the standard. -Glue/ Tape the standard beneath the top label of your paper. -Glue/ Tape just the boxes of the other two cutouts to your notebook paper. -Beneath DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION, provide a definition for the term. -On each of the fingers, write the letter that represents each method of indirect characterization. -Beneath the hand, provide a definition and write out the 5 methods of indirect characterization

19 Exit Activity -Provide both a direct and indirect characterization of yourself based on the story of your life. Each should be 3-4 sentences. -Write one sentence below each example explaining why your responses are direct or indirect.

This might include what you look like or articles of clothing that you wear.
