5 Persuasive Text #1 Author s Viewpoint Practice Reading is like any other skill. If you don't practice, you won't develop the vocabulary, the skills, and the ease. You won't be able to read fast. For some high school students, just reading a chapter in a textbook becomes like climbing a mountain, even though they are good readers. a. Reading is too difficult and isn t worth the time. b. High school students are terrible readers. c. Practicing reading is important to becoming a better reader. d. Students should practice reading textbooks. Persuasive Text #2 When your body doesn't have enough hours to rest, you may feel tired or cranky, or you may be unable to think clearly. You might have a hard time following directions, or you might have an argument with a friend over something really stupid. A school assignment that's normally easy may feel impossible, or you may feel clumsy playing your favorite sport or instrument. a. Getting enough sleep is important. b. It s okay not to sleep. c. Only adults need more sleep. d. Sleeping helps you play sports better. Persuasive Text #3 I have been in love with football since the age of ten. This is the most action-packed exciting sport there is. It is also the most fan friendly. 6 Persuasive Text #4 The last time you fell off your bike, scooter, or skateboard, maybe you got lucky and only got a bruise or a scrape. But thousands of kids suffer serious head injuries each year, some can cause permanent damage or even death. Helmets help dramatically lower the risk of head injury. In many states, it s illegal for children to ride without one. a. Playing outside is dangerous. b. Without a helmet, you ll hurt your head. c. You should wear a helmet to protect your head. d. Helmets aren t very important. Persuasive Text #5 Dehydration is the cause of many heat related illnesses like heat stroke and exhaustion. It can creep up on you before you notice any symptoms. It s important to drink water often to avoid dehydration. Persuasive Text #6 Americans are hooked on swordfish! But last month 27 top restaurant chefs took them off the menu. Why? The number of swordfish is shrinking fast, and chefs want to save the tasty fish. During the 1960s, fishermen switched from using harpoons to using long lines with hundreds of hooks. Result: many more small swordfish are caught. The small fish never get a chance to grow and produce more fish. a. Swordfish are very tasty. b. People should stop eating swordfish. c.
