4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Subject and Verb Agreement Rules Part 1 (numbers 1-4) (5-6 minutes) Subject and Verb Agreement is necessary to establish a grammatically correct sentence. Here are the first four rules in Subject and Verb Agreement to avoid confusion. 1. The verb must agree with its subject in number. The singular subject takes singular verbs while plural subject takes plural verbs. The secretary writes the reports. (singular) The members of the board meet monthly. (plural) 2. The groups of words or phrases that modify the subject do not affect the form of the verb. The projector that I leased is broken. (singular) The computers for this department are already delivered. (plural) 3. The prepositional phrases do not affect the subject and verb agreement. The laptop on top of my table is new. (singular) The office workers behind his room are noisy. (plural) 4. Always place the subject after the verb when the sentence is introduced by here and there. There is a mistake on the report that you submitted. (singular) Here are the materials for your presentation. (plural) Remember: Always determine whether the subject is singular or plural to know what verb to use in a sentence. Nouns and verbs form their plurals in opposite ways. Add an s or es to the singular form of the noun to make it plural (e.g. machine machines) while remove an s or es from the singular form of the verb to make it plural (e.g. makes make). Comprehension Check: How does the subject agree with the verb in number? How does a verb form its plural? Page 4
5 Exercise 1: Incomplete Sentences (5-6 minutes) Choose the word or phrase that would best complete the following sentences. 1. This new copier machine more expensive than the previous one. a. is b. are c. was d. were 2. The of paper is running out. a. supply b. supplies c. supplied d. supplying 3. The office equipment shop beside our office sales discount today. a. was giving b. were giving c. is giving d. are giving 4. The that I borrowed yesterday is already with you. a. scanners b. scanner c. scanning d. a scanner 5. Here the delivery men of the new office computers. a. came b. comes c. come d. coming Page 5
