1 Getting to know a text: What can you infer? Our team of young helpers cheer. The first flight of the world's highest commercial hotair balloon service is under way. Knots of early-rising schoolchildren and the odd peasant farmer stand and watch, amazed, at the apparition2 gliding over their heads. Our pick-up truck is far behind, jolting along the rutted track that is the valley's only road. and ends up on its side We climb out, shake hands, high-five and take pictures.

2 Getting to know a text: What can you infer? the river, which we could see winding far away, resembled a long, gray, metalliclooking snake, creeping through the fields. the gas-lights along the different lines of road burst into light, one after another, the ground seemed to be covered with little lamps, such as are hung on Christmas-trees, giant city with a dense canopy of smoke hanging over it,

9 Paper 2 Question 2 Top Tips Open with a summary sentence: The places the hot-air balloons fly are over in Source A and Source B are different because the texts are written at different times. Ping Pong your answer write about Source A contrasting connective then Source B. Quotations must be integrated into sentences. You need at least two examples of inference for each quote. 11 Question 3: The BIG Question 12 Marks 12 Minutes You now need to refer only to Source B from lines 4 to 18. How does the writer use language to convey how small everything on the ground looks from the balloon? Key words retrieved from the question. Why are they important? Point Evidence 1) Use your topic sentence to make a point relevant to the question. 2) Select evidence from the text pick out a key quotation. Analyse Link 3) Analyse the evidence this should be the longest part of the paragraph. 4) Finish the paragraph by establishing a link back to the question.

12 As we floated along above the fields, the sight was the most exquisite visual delight ever experienced. The houses directly underneath us looked like the tiny wooden things out of a child s box of toys, and the streets as if they were ruts in the ground; and we could hear the hum of the voices from every spot we passed over, faint as the buzzing of so many bees. Far beneath, in the direction we were sailing, lay the suburban fields; and here the earth, with its tiny hills and plains and streams, assumed the appearance of the little coloured plaster models of countries. The roadways striping the land were like narrow brown ribbons, and the river, which we could see winding far away, resembled a long, gray, metallic-looking snake, creeping through the fields. The bridges over the Thames were positively like planks; and the tiny black barges, as they floated along the stream, seemed no bigger than summer insects on the water. The largest meadows were about the size of green-baize table covers; and across these we could just trace the line of the South-Western Railway, with the little whiff of white steam issuing from some passing engine, and no greater in volume than the jet of vapour from an ordinary tea-kettle. 17 Question 4: The BIG Question 16 Marks 20 Minutes Record the key words in this question: For this question, you need to refer to the whole of Source A, together with the whole of Source B. Compare how the writers convey their different experiences of the hot-air balloon ride. In your answer, you could: compare their different experiences (WHAT) compare the methods the writers use to convey those experiences (HOW) support your response with references to both texts. (WHERE) This is the most important word in the question as it is asking you to write about the effects of the language through the techniques (language or structure) that the writers have used.

20 Compare how each source conveys their different experience of the hot air balloon Compare the overall message in each of the extracts. Are they similar or different in content? You can t get above band 2 unless you do this! B Point Quote Explain Don t forget to mention methods the writer uses. Firstly, in source A, the writer conveys nervousness as six [of us] climb somewhat apprehensively into the hot air balloon. The writer makes the reader feel that all six are hesitant which heightens the anxiety felt during the preparations for take off of the hot air balloon. Furthermore, the adverb apprehensively suggests a fear and trepidation of the dangers that could go wrong on the balloons maiden voyage across Bhutan. This is exaggerated by the adjective last which builds tension as we don t know if this will be their last blast of life. However, in source B the writer highlights he is excited [ ] about a hot air balloon experience.
