Exemplar Student Response CLAIM: Jupiter s actions cause Prometheus and Io to live very hard lives. Ø Chains up Prometheus because he is angry that Prometheus disobeys him 39 Ø Falls in love with Io and Io falls in love with him 41 Ø Doesn t want Juno to be upset with him by finding out he loves Io so he turns her into a cow Ø Asks Mercury to kill Argus, which makes Juno more upset so she sends a fly to pester Io Ø Returns Io to a human and lives happily with her for a while (then dumps her 46)s Criteria for Success for Target Task Ø Ss must recall that Jupiter chains Prometheus because he is upset that Prometheus disobeys him Ø Ss must infer that Jupiter s love for Io causes a lot of bad things Ø Ss must infer that Jupiter s love makes Io love him Ø Ss must infer that Jupiter s love for Io makes Juno angry and Jealous Ø Ss must infer that Jupiter s doesn t want to upset Juno, SO he turns Io into a cow Ø Ss must infer that he gets Argus killed Ø Ss must infer that Argus death makes Juno even more mad, SO she sends a fly to bother Io Ø Ss must infer that Jupiter casues Io to turn back into a human so they can live together Key Vocabulary and Definitions Vocabulary Do Now eternal Review ramble, enraged, sympathy, misery, torment Breakdown of Lesson Sequence/Structure 1. 2 Before Reading Warm-Up Today we will do some close reading of our second myth, Prometheus and Io. What was the main problem in the story? How was it solved? (Have turn and talk partners do quick retell of story s key events). Materials VOCAB (see above) Preview Target Task Today we ll be CLOSE READING the key events and details from Prometheus and Io. Who can remember what it means to close read a text? (Connect back to central message days from folk tales unit!) We re going to be zooming in our focus on Jupiter s actions, and how they impacted or influenced the plot of the story. Unit Plan Notes: This lesson is set up as a close read. Scholars have a basic understanding of the text from lesson 4, so they should be able to reread with a different and deeper lens. Scholars should reread with the lens of figuring out how Jupiter s actions contributed to the sequence of events and influenced Prometheus and Io. Mini-Lesson: How a character impacts the plot FOR SMALL GROUP OF STRUGGLERS WHAT: Analyze how one character changes the way OTHER characters act and what big events happen next. How: think about what things 1 character CAUSES to happen and how people REACT to it. WHY: to get a sense of how a single character can change the way that characters interact with each other and the world around them. *NOTE ON SKILL PROGRESSION: Scholars should be mastering annotation of these myths/fiction texts in general with the following progression of complexity: 1. Key plot events 2. Character reactions 3. How character responses drive plot During Reading Have scholars reread the text independently, annotating with a focus on how Jupiter s actions impact the plot - As they read, prompt them with the questions below if they are missing any annotations about any plot events - If a scholar finishes reading early, they should do their MC TT, then start their brainstorming and writing - Materials 2

Juno would have discovered our love turns her into a cow **IF SCHOLARS ARE MISSING THESE ANNOTATIONS, PULL A SMALL GROUP AND PROMPT TO REREAD FOR THE CAUSE OF WHAT HAPPENS TO IO** Jupiter gave me to Juno Jupiter causes all these events to happen because he makes Juno jealous What happens to Argus? Why? How does Juno react? Whose fault is that? 45 Why does Mercury kill Argus? Jupiter sends to Mercuryà Mercury kills Argus This is still Jupiter s fault because Juno knows that Jupiter wants to be with Io and not her and this enrages her Jupiter wants Mercury to save Io from Argus to set her free so he can be with her 46 How do Io and Jupiter feel at the end of the story? Why?
