1 A Tomato in the Sun Character costume description: Tom Atoes- Young adult male, dressed in all red as a tomato Applegail Young adult female, dressed in all red with a green leaf as an apple Walter Melon- Middle aged man, dressed in greens as a watermelon Rev. McIntosh- Older man, dressed in red as an apple Setting Church of the Growing Seed ( Late Night ) Stage props to act as church pews should be set up facing towards the audience. Tom Atoes- I didn t think you d come Applegail [Applegail enters stage left] Applegail I promised I would didn t I Tom? [They embrace] Applegail- I had to wait till Pa went to sleep before sneaking out. Tom Atoes You re sure he has no idea we ve been coming to his church late at night like this? Applegail I think so Tom [She puts her head on his chest] Applegail [She puts her hands together in a pleading position] Tom why don t we just tell him? I hate keeping secrets from my pa. Tom Atoes-[He backs away] You know why we can t do that. Me and you fruits like you and veggies like me we re not supposed to be together! Applegail- But why Tom? I don t care if you re a tomato, you re more of a fruit than any of the other fruits in this town! Tom Atoes- [He turns away] No one sees me as any kind of fruit. They just see me as some low down mater, not fit to wear the same dressing as them.
2 Applegail- [Runs to him] I see you for who you are Tom Atoes! That s why I love you, and I wish they d all just leave us be. Tom Atoes- [Crosses his arms and looks offstage] Maybe in another time and another garden we could just be together in this big mixed up salad of a world. But we have to keep this quiet. [He grabs her hands tenderly] As long as I can be with you, my love. You are the only apple of my eye. [They embrace for a moment] Applegail- [She takes a step back] Today I saw Walter Melon came over to the house again to talk to Pa. I was sleeping in my basket when I was awoken by their talk. They were talking about me Tom. Walter Melon plans to ask for my leaf in marriage! Oh Tom I don t want to marry that mean old bruised up Melon. But my Pa He thinks cause he s the Reverened he knows what s best for me! That s why I wanted to tell him about you Tom. Tom Atoes [He becomes angry] That Walter Melon he s the seediest fruit I ever had the displeasure to meet. [He grabs her hands excitedly] We should elope! To the North. Applegail- [Turns away] We cantaloupe. Tom Atoes Why not? Up there the fruits aren t as bitter as they are here. I hear it s all that maple sugar they coat themselves in makes em sweeter than a newborn peach baby. Applegail- But pa he ll be all alone. I m all he s got since ma passed away from pesticidis. Walter Melon- [Off stage] Who s that in there church? Applegail It s Walter Melon! Hide Tom! Tom Atoes- [Scrambles behind a church pew] Applegail-[Scrambles to follow but is stopped] [Walter Melon enters stage left] Walter Melon- Applegail Mcintosh. What s a sweet little apple like you doing out so late at your pa s church? Eager to get down on your knees and pray? Applegail- [Doesn t make eye contact] I was just leaving. Excuse me. [Tries to walk by him] Walter Melon[Grabs her arm forcefully and smiles] Where are you going? Don t get all crisp on me now, just stay and talk a bit. Applegail- Pa will be waiting for me. I have to go.
3 Walter Melon- You know, me and your Pa were talking today- I know you heard. Marry me Applegail, I deserve a ripe little fruit like you as my bride. Applegail- [Quietly] No. I can t. Walter Melon-[Grabs her tighter] Applegail- Ow, you re bruising me. Walter Melon- Girl you must have applesauce for brains. You think I haven t heard from the grapevine about you talking to that mater boy Tom all friendly like? You better hurry up and become mine real quick before people get bad ideas about ya. Might start calling you a veggie lover. Applegail- Let me go Walter. I have to go home. Walter Melon - [Pulls Applegail to center stage forcefully] Your Pa s asleep, he s got service in the morning remember? Besides, he wants us to be together. He only wants the best for his little Applegail after all. [Makes a move on her] Applegail- Let me go! Tom Atoes- Unhand her. [Tom steps out from behind the pew] Walter Melon- [Throws Applegail to the floor] Now what do we have here? A mater. You ve been seeing this moldy vegetable haven t you Applegail? Why you unholy mater loving seedless girl! I m going to make ketchup out of you boy! Applegail- [Crying] Just leaf him alone! You re beating him into a pulp!
4 Walter Melon-[Hits Tom to the ground] You re peaching to the choir girl! You think you can be with her Tom Atoes? You ll never be with her! [Kicks him] Applegail- Stop! You re killing him you monster! [Run in between them] Walter Melon-[Hits Applegail accidentally, she falls to the ground dead] Tom Atoes-[cries] What have you done? You ve sauced her! You ve sauced my poor sweet Applegail! Walter Melon-[Backs away] I didn t mean to.. I mean she just jumped between. [Runs off stage right] Tom Atoes-[Kneels over her body- spotlight on Tom] Rev. McIntosh- Hello? Is someone in here? Mass doesn t start for another hour. [Sees Tom and dead Applegail] Tom Atoes? And Applegail? Applegail! [Runs to her body] My little daughter Applegail. Shes sauced! She s sauced forever! What happened?! Tom Atoes- [Quietly speaks] Walter Melon found out about us. He tried to kill me. She saved me. Rev. McIntosh- Found out? You mean you two were together? Tom Atoes- Yes! And if you would have just accepted that she wouldn t be sauced! I loved her sir! I loved her with all my roots and all my stems! Rev. McIntosh- [Stands up and paces around the church, his head in his hands. He stops center stage looking out to the audience away from Tom] Maybe We re wrong after all. I see your
5 tears boy. I see now that veggies feel- maybe even more than us fruits sometimes! I realize we all came from the same dirt, and grew from the same sun! Applegail she knew it. She knew that we should all be treated equal. If only I had realized sooner She would still be soaking up the sun with the rest of us. But because of our hate she s in the great garden in the sky now and I m sure she s crying tears of apple juice looking at this messed up world we re in. Rev. McIntosh- [Rips up paper in hand] I have a new sermon for today for the fruits of this town. Starting now, things are going to change. Tomatoes- they re fruits too! She knew it all of us will too one day. [Looks back at Applegail] I swear on Granny apple s grave- on my very core; the time is ripe and things are gonna change Applegail.
