Today s agenda: IRB Look closely at Chapter 1 as a class Compare Old Major s speech to Lenin s speech Today s Homework: Read Chapter 2 of AF Essay Study for stems quiz on Thursday Today s objective: I will compare and contrast Lenin s speech to the speech of a character in chapter one of Animal Farm by composing an essay using textual evidence from each.

2 Animal Farm Chapter 1-4 Vocabulary

3 Discuss Chapter 1 What stood out to you as important? Do you sympathize with the animals complaints and goals? Why or why not? How is Old Major s speech similar to any political speeches you have ever heard or studied?

4 Step 1: Reread the speech. Annotate it the way you normally would.

5 Step 2: Annotate with a purpose by completing # Highlight all the words that show Old Major has an awareness of his whole audience. (Place a #1 beside these words.) 2.Highlight the words that show he is aware of individuals and groups within it. (Place a #2 beside these words.) 3.A rhetorical question is when someone asks a question that is not meant to be answered, but to set up for the next piece of information and answer the question himself. Draw a? in the margin alongside all the occasions on which Old Major uses rhetorical questions and / or asks and answers questions. 4.Circle all the occasions on which Old major talks negatively about his opposition. (Place a #3 next to these items.) 5.What is the tone of this speech? Place a box around all words/phrases that help communicate the tone of his speech.

7 Persuasion Persuasion is a way to get others to believe something or do something. There are many different techniques to persuade someone. Old Major gives an important speech in which he persuades the listeners to believe in the need for rebellion.

8 Some persuasive techniques include... Rule of Three listing or talking about things in groups of three. Three is considered more effective number than other numbers. Example: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness or blood, sweat, and tears or Friends, Romans, and Countrymen Exaggeration this is overstatement, stating the case too strongly, magnifying importance. For example, "I'll die if he finds out!" Exaggeration makes a point dramatically to reinforce it. Alliteration repeating a similar sound or letter, eg, back-breaking work. Alliteration persuades people by adding emphasis.

9 Some persuasive techniques include... Repetition It forces the listener to remember things. Rhetorical Questions These are questions which are not supposed to be answered. They are supposed to make you think. Often, the answer is actually within the question. Emotive Language The use of strong, emotional words to play on people s feelings. For example, adjectives like sleazy, slimy, vicious, disgusting, outrageous create a very negative feeling towards whatever they are attached to. Can you really trust a vicious dog who has a sleazy owner?

10 Karl Marx A German intellectual who lived in the mid-1800s. Believed societies are divided into two groups: a working class and an owner class. The working class creates all the products, while the owner class enjoys all the benefits of these products. This class division leads to inequality and oppression of the working class.

11 Karl Marx Marx s objective was to create a classless society in which the work is shared by all, for the benefit of all, and he believed revolution was the way to achieve this goal. In leading workers toward revolution, Marx used slogans like From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs. Major s speech in the novel s opening chapter reflects many Marxist ideas: from the opening Comrades, a typical form of address in the former Soviet Union to the revolutionary song he teaches the other animals.
