Acrostic An acrostic poem is when the first letter of each line spells a word when they are read vertically. The title of this type of poem is usually the same as the word spelled in the poem. Below is an example of a published acrostic poem that I found on write4fun.net: Nature by Jordan Nutt: Nice and peaceful as you walk around Animals in trees and crawling around Trees and plants everywhere you look Upsetting is not there at all Rain drops scattered on all the leaves Earth sounds 2
Now here are some examples of my own acrostic poems: Tree : Trunk Rings inside to tell its age Every leaf is green during the spring and summer Elm is only one type Fall Fascinating colors Auburn, yellow, and orange all around Leaves are falling Light outside for fewer hours Moon Many phases Orbed Orbits around the earth Night 3
Cinquain A cinquain poem is a short poem that usually doesn t rhyme. It consists of a total of twenty-two syllables in five lines; the first line has two, the second four, the third six, the fourth eight, and finally the fifth line has two syllables. There is also another form that can be used to write a cinquain poem. In that form, the first line is a noun, the second line describes the noun, the third line is an action, the fourth line is a feeling or effect, and the fifth line is a synonym for the noun of the first line. Below is a published example of a cinquain poem that I found on poemhunter.com that was written by Dawn Slanker: Caterpillar Relentless, Ravenous Constructing, Evolving, Emerging Wondrous gift of nature Butterfly 4
Now here are some examples of my own cinquain poems: Snow Snow White, Cold Blows, Drifts, Freezes Brings joy to children Blizzard Dog Dog Loyal, Companion Runs, Barks, Plays Love for owner Puppy 5
Clerihew A clerihew poem is a comic verse that contains two couplets and an aabb rhyming scheme. Within the first rhyme, it deals with a person or character. Usually the first line of this poem names a person, and the second line ends with something that rhymes with the name. Below are examples of published clerihew poems that I found on poemhunter.com that were written by Diane Hine: David Attenborough, nature lover thorough Intrepid explorer of fauna and flora. Danny Draper, thought landscaper Word exultant tree consultant. 6
Now here are some of my own clerihew poems: Charlie Shortino Charlie Shortino, in the studio Gives a broadcast about the forecast. Richard Parker Richard Parker, very aggressive for starter But became friends with Pi only to break that tie 7
Diamante A diamante is a contrast poem that is made up of seven lines into the shape of a diamond. The first line begins with a noun or a subject, and the second line consists of two adjectives describing the noun or subject. Then in the third line, there are three words ending with ing that are used to describe the noun or subject. Next, there are four words in the fourth line: two of which are about the noun or subject, and the other two of which are about its antonym or synonym. If and antonym is used to end this line, then this is where the shift in the poem should take place. The fifth line of the poem has three more words that end in ing, but this time they are describing the antonym or synonym of the noun or subject. In the sixth line, two adjectives describe the antonym or synonym. Finally, in the seventh line there is an antonym or synonym of the subject or noun. Below is an example of a published diamante poem that I found that was written by Marie Summers: Rain humid, damp refreshing, dripping, splattering wet, slippery, cold, slushy sliding, melting, freezing frigid, icy Snow 8
Now here are some of my own examples of diamante poems: Spring rebirth, growth planting, sprouting, flourishing fresh, new, dead, dormant dying, changing, migrating Fall Day busy, bright wakening, bustling, depleting light, sun, dark, moon sleeping, relaxing, resting Night 9
Haiku A haiku is an unrhymed Japanese verse that consists of three lines. The first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables, and the third line has five syllables. So, a haiku poem should have a total of seventeen syllables. This type of poem is often written in present tense and it mainly focuses on nature related topics. Below is an example of a published haiku poem that I found. This poem was written by Andrea: Pink cherry blossoms Cast shimmering reflections On seas of Japan 10
Here are some of my own haikus that I came up with: Red poinsettia Popular around Christmas Grown in Mexico Hurricane Sandy Deadliest of the season Category three 11
