Supporting Inferences with Exact Quotes from a Text Definitions: Inference- a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence Quotation Marks- mark a persons speech and/or a quote from the text. Quotation- a quotation from a text or speech. A quotation your conclusions because it shows for why you think what you think. When you use quotations as evidence for your conclusions, your writing is more. NOTE: It is important to quote the text exactly. Otherwise, the person or author being quoted will feel misrepresented. There are may consequences for misquoting a person or plagiarizing, the worst being that you are sued for stealing intellectual property. 1
Inferences from short text Bob grabbed the heavy, black ball and put his fingers into the three holes. Then he walked up to the line on the wooden floor and rolled the ball. A few moments later, he heard the sound of pins falling, and he called strike! I See I Know So? What is going on? 2
The Boa Constrictor Song I'm being swallered by a Boa Constrictor a Boa Constrictor, a Boa Constrictor I'm being swallered by a Boa Constrictor and I don't - like snakes - one bit! Oh no, he swallered my toe. Oh gee, he swallered my knee. Oh fiddle, he swallered my middle. Oh what a pest, he swallered my chest. Oh heck, he swallered my neck. Oh, dread, he swallered my - (BURP) I See I Know So? What is going on? 3
Inferences from a Passage Out West Hannah and her brother, Ben, sat in the back of the covered wagon. They were heading across Kansas. Twelve wagons were in their wagon train and each carried a family. By noon, the air was hot and dry. The sky was too bright to look at. Everything seemed to glow in the heat. There was no place to hide from the sun. No trees. No large rock formations. The ground was flat for as far as the eye could see. What do you suppose Oregon will be like? Ben asked Hannah. I hear that it s green and that there are trees everywhere. Ma said that everything grows fast there. They ll be food and water and everything we need. Ben tried to imagine a place that was cool. It was hard to do in the blazing sun. Both children liked evenings best. The air cooled down. The wagon train stopped. The children could jump down onto the ground and run around as long as they stayed close. Then it was time for dinner under the stars. 4

An American Hero A farewell to Sally Ride, the first U.S. woman to travel to space JULY 24, 2012 By Suzanne Zimbler Not long ago, few little girls imagined they could grow up to become astronauts. For years in the United States, only men had that opportunity. In 1983, that changed. Sally Ride made history by becoming the first American woman to travel into space. I See I Know So? What is going on? 6
On Monday, Ride died at the age of 61. "Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model, President Barack Obama said in a statement. She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars." I See I Know So? What is going on? 7
A Shining Star Ride became interested in space when she was a kid. If you asked me when I was 12 whether I wanted to be an astronaut, I m sure I would have said yes, she told TFK in a 2010 interview. But I didn t even think about that as a possible career. After studying physics in college and graduate school, Ride got her chance. She was accepted into NASA s astronaut training program in 1978, and then chosen to be the first American female in space. In 1983, she blasted into space aboard the Challenger shuttle. There is no amusement park ride on Earth that even comes close, she said. Ride returned to space on the Challenger a second time in Between the two missions, she spent a total of 343 hours in orbit. After that, she remained involved with the space program and also worked to share her passion for science with kids. She wrote five science books for children, and started her own science education company. Her Legacy Lives On Ride knew that she held a unique place in history. I realised how important it was for a woman to break that barrier and open the door for other women to be able to do the same exciting things that the men had been doing, she said. Since Ride s historic trip, more than 40 other American women have traveled to space. They all had Ride to thank for opening the door to the final frontier. 8
