9 Week 3 of 2 nd sw Monday 10/23/17 # Capitalization Rule Example 1 Capitalize the first word of sentences. 2 Relatives should be capitalized when used with the person s name or as their name. 3 DO NOT capitalize titles showing family relationships when they are preceded by a possessive noun or pronoun. Seriously. The first word in all sentences. DON T BE LAZY. That summer, Uncle Bob visited. He said Mom has always loved to cook. His aunt never went. My mom said we can t go. Sam s uncle likes me.

10 Tuesday 10/24/17 # Capitalization Rule Example 4 Capitalize titles of educational courses when they are language courses or when they are followed by a number. DO NOT capitalize school subjects discussed in a general manner. 5 Capitalize names of people, events, places 6 Capitalize the names of organizations, government bodies, political parties, races, nationalities, languages and religions. This year I will be taking math, French, science and history. I would take chemistry, but that s too hard. 11 In Text Citations When you know the author, format as below:, (Author s last name). The best teacher is Ms. Beverley, (Beverley). When you do not know the author, use the article name:, (Article Title). The best teacher is Ms. Beverley, (The Official List of Best Teachers).

12 Wednesday 10/25/17 # Quotation Rules Example 1 A direct quotation is enclosed in quotation marks. An indirect quotation is not. 2 Use a comma after short introductory expressions that precede direct quotations. 3 Use punctuation (comma,? or!) after a direct quotation followed by a concluding expression. When I learn to ride, he said, I ll wear a helmet. The boy said he d wear knee pads too. My sister warned, If you borrow my coat, you ll be responsible for it. If you sign the contract today, you ll have to pay rent starting today, the landlord warned.

13 Turn in your AOW to the box! Thursday 10/26/17 # Quotation Rules Example 4 Interrupted quotes need commas (inside the quotation mark), and again after the interruption, but do not need caps on the second part of the quote. 5 Place punctuation inside the final quotation mark. 6 Capitalize the first word in the quotation. If you sign today, he repeated, you ll pay today. (The you ll... is lower case!) Betty pondered, How could I fail the test? Betty pondered, How could I fail the test?

14 Friday 10/27/17 # Quotation Rules Example 7 If the end mark goes with the entire sentence, not the quotation, put it outside of the quotation marks. 8 Use single quotation marks to set off a quote within a quote. (Notice the CAPS!) Don t you dare say I disagree! The lawyer said, Great news! and I was happy for the first time today, Alicia explained.

17 Week 1: Thursday 11/2/2017 Apostrophes vs. Plurals 7. For many years, gold was Alaskas most important product. 8. Most mines yields were not as great as the miners expected.

18 Week 1: Friday 11/3/2017 Apostrophes vs. Plurals 9. However, many miners stayed to become permanent inhabitants of Alaska and the territorys population doubled in a tenyear period. 10. Alaska was one of the last two states to join the Union.

23 Week 5: Friday 11/10/17 Apostrophes vs. Verbs and Plurals 19. A fragments got something missing: its a group of words that dont express a complete thought. 20. A run-on sentence contains two or more complete thoughts that are not properly separated.
