Some adjectives may fit into more than one sentence, but try to end up with each sentence containing the adjective that is the best fit. 3 Year 4 Maths Chunking Division The chunking method is a way of working out longer division sums where the bus stop method won t help us. It can take a little while to get the hang of, but just follow the example below and we re sure you ll be cracking complicated division questions with ease in no time at all! Example Remember that the above is really asking us, how many 12s are there in 386?. That s a little too much to take in all in one go, so we need to break up our sum into chunks. We do this by repeating multiplication sums that take us closer and closer to our answer. Start by using numbers that are easy to multiply, like 5, 10 and x 20 = 240 We can work out quite easily that 20 x 12 = 240 (because we know that 12 x 2 = 24). Now, subtract 240 from 386. We can now see that we have 146 left over. This means that we can t take away another chunk of 20 x 12, as 240 is bigger than 146. However, 10 x 12 = 120, so we can take this away instead. Now we only have 26 left! The closest we can get to 26 is 2 x 12 = 24, so we take that away too. 2 x 12 = = 2 We ve now got as close to zero as we can go. 4 Year 4 Maths Chunking Division (Continued) To find our answer, we now need to add up all of the numbers on the left hand side of our working out (these are all of the numbers we multiplied by 12). + 2 x 12 = = 2 32 So, the answer to is 32 remainder 2 (because we had 2 left over at the end of our chunking). That s it! we know that it s quite a lot to take in at first, but once you get the hang of it you should find that it s a really useful tool for solving long division sums.
