1. Found Poetry Using magazines rip or cut out words or descriptions to use in a poem. Glue the words onto a new piece of paper to create a poem of your choosing. The poem can be in any format: free verse, rhyming couplets, haiku etc. My example:
2. Blackout Poetry Select a photocopied page from a novel. Using a black marker circle descriptive words to make a poem. Black out the rest of the page so that your reader is able to clearly see your new poem.

3. BananaPoems Have each student in your group create (at least) one interesting word using Bananagram tiles. Using all of your group s words, create your own unique poem. You may work together as a group if you wish or independently.
4. Poetry of the Senses 1. Choose one of the following scenes to use as the setting of your poem and use it as your title. You may choose your own scene if you d prefer. Scene options: - Snowy Cabin in the Woods - Summer at the Beach - An Autumn Walk - The Secret Garden in the Spring 2. Create a poem by describing your scene using your senses. Use these sentence openings to help you get started: - I see - I hear - The scent - The texture - The taste - I imagine
5. Acrostic Poems An acrostic poem is where the first letters of each line spell out the word or phrase. For example: Choose any word you like to begin. It can be your name, a friend s name, any other noun, adjective, etc. It s up to you. Please be creative and descriptive!
6. Limericks A limerick is often a funny poem with a strong beat. Limericks are very light hearted poems and can sometimes be utter nonsense. They are great for kids to both read and write as they are short and funny. The Structure of a Limerick Poem A Limerick consists of five lines. The first line of a limerick poem usually begins with 'There was a...' and ends with a name, person or place. The last line of a limerick is normally a little farfetched or unusual. A limerick should have a rhyme scheme of aabba: This means lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme and lines 3 and 4 rhyme. Also, lines 1,2 and 5 should have 7 10 syllables and lines 3 and 4 should have 5 7 syllables. An example of a Limerick Poem by poet Edward Lear 'There was an old man with a beard Who said, 'It is just as I feared, Two owls and a hen A lark and a wren Have all built their nests in my beard!'
An infatuated man from Dover, was left by his imaginary lover. He pulled his hair, in sheer despair, forgetting a wig was his cover. There once was a girl Selina, who wanted to be a ballerina. She went on her toes, and broke her nose. Then she became a cleaner. There was an old man from Peru Who dreamt he was eating his shoe. He awoke in a fright In the middle of the night And found it was perfectly true. There was an Old Man in a boat, Who said, 'I'm afloat, I'm afloat!' When they said, 'No! you ain't!' He was ready to faint, That unhappy Old Man in a boat.
7. Poetry in Music Did you know that some lyrics in a song can be considered to be poetry? From ballads (a poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas) to rhymes to descriptive phrases, there is so much poetry to be found in music! Choose a song. Look up the lyrics on Google. Write out at least half a page of the song, analyzing the lyrics as if it were a poem. Highlight descriptive words, label the rhyme scheme, find imagery, etc. Here is my example: What Makes You Beautiful You're insecure, Don't know what for, You're turning heads when you walk through the door, Don't need make-up, To cover up, Being the way that you are is enough, Everyone else in the room can see it, Everyone else but you, (see back)
Baby you light up my world like nobody else, The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed, But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell, You don't know, Oh, oh, You don't know you're beautiful, If only you saw what I can see, You'd understand why I want you so desperately, Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe, You don't know, Oh, oh, You don't know you're beautiful, Oh, oh, That's what makes you beautiful So c-come on. You got it wrong. To prove I'm right I put it in a song. I don't know why You're being shy, And turn away when I look into your eye-eye-eyes, Everyone else in the room can see it, Everyone else but you, Baby you light up my world like nobody else, The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed, But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell, You don't know, Oh oh, You don't know you're beautiful, If only you saw what I can see
