THE INEXPLICABLE OCCURRENCE OF A MONSTER LIVING IN ELLSWORTHS WARDROBE Written by and based on a short story by Soraia Rosa

SCENE ONE: OPENING CHARACTERS: The suitcase opens, in turn opening the curtains inside to reveal the Narrator sitting in his chair Come away o human child, to the end of the world, with a monster hand in hand This is the story of a young boy named Harry, Harry Ellsworth, and the time he was visited in the night, by a monster. Now this may sound quite scary to you but I assure you it isn t, yet alas this is no fairy tale and you ll have to trust I me, your humble narrator and read on to discover for yourself if there are any happily ever afters to be found here for this is not your average tale and we are headed for dark and murky waters, yet before I give too much away we must get to it for there s so much to see and so much to talk about all in so little time, let us begin SCENE TWO: BREAKFAST CHARACTERS:, AND THE As opposed to the Narrator saying tick tock, tick tock, we will instead hear the sound of an actual clock ticking Tick tock, tick tock, harry awoke to sound of his bedside clock ticking away. The time was half past seven in the morning and immediately harry was excited because not only was it the first day of the summer holidays it was more importantly Harry s ninth birthday Harry jumps out of bed and runs downstairs to find his mum making his breakfast in the kitchen For harry it was tradition that his dad would always make him

pancakes for breakfast on his birthday Where s dad? Oh I m sorry harry but it was just too early to wake your dad up, he didn t get to sleep till quite late last night Is dad okay? Of course he is harry, he was just feeling a little under the weather is all The zoo, Harry thought quickly to himself, it was also birthday tradition that him and his father would go to London zoo together, Harry s mum being a teacher she was always busy with all the schoolwork she brought home, she never minded Harry and his father spending the whole day together without her Is dad still taking me to the zoo today? Of course he will Harry, let s just let him sleep a while longer and he ll be good to go, now let s eat these pancakes before they get cold okay? Mary brings a plate of pancakes over and sets them down on the table Harry excitedly sat down to enjoy his pancakes only to find his mum had made him the thin kind, his dad always made the big thick ones with lots of maple syrup

Something wrong Harry? It s nothing mum, just dad always makes the big thick pancakes Oh I m so sorry Harry, do you want me make them again? No it s okay mum, they look really good, thank you Harry started to eat his pancakes, they had golden syrup on instead of maple syrup, Harry was tempted so say something but he chose not to SCENE THREE: AFTER BREAKFAST AND WATCHING CARTOONS CHARACTERS:, AND THE After breakfast Harry helped his mum wash and put away the dishes Why don t you go and watch some cartoons and I ll go and see if dads awake Okay Harry goes into the living room and sits down on the sofa, he turns on the television Harry was already thinking of what to watch, adventure time he thought to himself, he had already watched all five seasons on Netflix but he was more than happy to watch them over and over again, he briefly thought of going upstairs to ask if his dad wanted to come and watch it with him but he thought maybe he should listen to his mum and let his dad rest a little while,

after all he was going to need all his energy for their fun day out at the zoo together, yes harry thought to himself, a little adventure time then a bath and dad will be ready and off we ll go. Harry could barely contain his excitement as he watched six episodes and then seven and then eight and then halfway through the ninth episode harry began to get the feeling that dad wasn t coming downstairs any time soon. He ran to the kitchen to check the time on the big clock that hung above the oven to find that it was half past twelve already, we should be at the zoo already! Harry panicked Harry runs upstairs and stops at his mum and dads door, we can hear them talking ARTHUR I ll be okay, don t worry We hear footsteps coming towards the door, not wanting to get caught listening in Harry runs back downstairs, almost falling down them in the panic, once back downstairs he quickly jumps on to the sofa, Arthur ARTHUR Right then birthday boy, ready to go see some awesome animals? But I haven t had a bath or anything ARTHUR Oh no need for that Harry, just throw on some clothes, you can t smell worse than some of those animals right? I guess your right dad ARTHUR Of course I am, now run upstairs and get dressed and then we ll go okay?

Okay dad Harry runs upstairs Harry was brimming with excitement as he ran upstairs, now it feels like my birthday Harry thought to himself as he got ready, He was dressed in a matter of moments and back downstairs, He went to the kitchen to find his mum and dad talking, they were talking about all the schoolwork Harrys mum had to do that day, Harry always thought it was odd that his mum had to do homework, even when you leave school and grow up you still have to do homework, how odd indeed Harry thought ARTHUR Ready to go? I am indeed ARTHUR Alright then let s get going, lots to see, lot to do You two behave now ARTHUR It s this one you need to worry about, right come on Arthur scooped Harry up and ran with him to the front door and out to the driveway. Harry jumped straight in the car and put on his seatbelt, he liked when it was just him and dad in the car because it meant he got to sit in the front seat, right next to dad, His dad got in the car and started the engine, Harry always enjoyed the sound

the car made when dad started it, Harry noticed how heavily his dad was breathing, almost like he was out of breath, like he had been running Are you okay dad? ARTHUR Of course I am Harry, just not as young as I used to be SCENE FOUR: THE ZOO CHARACTERS:, ARTHUR, THE, BY STANDERS The cabinet opens and as Harry and Arthur start moving across the backdrop starts slowly turning, then as Harry begins to run the backdrop turns even faster and eventually Arthur moves backwards off the set to show that Harry is running so fast that his dad has fallen behind When they got to the zoo Harrys dad seemed to have caught his breath and seemed to Harry just like his usual self, Harry ran straight to the penguins, the penguins were always his favourite and he always wanted to see those first, yet in all his excitement and running Harry suddenly realised that he had forgotten about his dad and when he got to the penguins and turned around hoping to see his dad standing there behind him just like he always is when they come to the zoo, he wasn t there, Harry immediately started running back the way he had come, scared and panicked, how had he lost dad he thought to himself, was dad okay? Harry had no idea and then he saw dad, he

was lying on the floor, surrounded by people As Harry slows down the crowd of people surrounding Arthur slowly move in from the side of the set through some form of door or panel, in time with Harrys slowing pace Dad! Harry pushes his way through the crowd, he grabs a hold of his dad and shakes him Dad! BY STANDER Someone s called an ambulance Harry lies on top of his dad sobbing heavily Now listen carefully for this tale is about to take a turn for the worse, but stay with me viewers for there is light on the other side and I, your humble narrator am the one to guide you there SCENE FIVE: THE HOSPITAL CHARACTERS: AND The ambulance had taken Harry and his dad from the zoo to the hospital and then Harrys mum came to meet them there, They sat in a waiting room for what felt to Harry like an eternity before a doctor came to speak to them Harrys mum went to speak to the doctor and told Harry to wait there Mary and the doctor are talking on the other side of a door next to the waiting room, we can t make out the actual words of the conversation, more just mumblings of adult voices, harry sits alone in the waiting room staring at the floor, tapping his feet until they finish talking and Mary comes back to the waiting room

We re going home Harry But what about dad? Dad s going to have to seep here tonight Harry What s going on mum? Nothing Harry your dad just needs a check-up and it s been a while since he had one so it can take a long time is all So that s why he has to sleep here? Yes Harry so don t you worry Is dad going to be okay? Of course he is Harry, now come on let s get home and I ll make you whatever you want for your birthday dinner, and let s not forget you ve got presents to open still Harry gets up to leave This made Harry feel a little better as they left the hospital SCENE SIX: THE NEXT DAY CHARACTERS:, AND THE Tick tock, tick tock, harry awoke to the sound of his bedside clock, it was half past seven in the morning, it was the second day of the summer holidays and Harry was exhausted, he had been up most of the night worrying about his

dad, He sat up in bed and looked over in the corner at his birthday presents, still wrapped from the day before, his mum had asked if he wanted to open them but he said he wanted to wait for when his dad came home so he could be there when he did Harry runs downstairs to the kitchen to find his mum crying, she has the house phone in her hand, she doesn t notice harry standing there Mum, what s wrong? Oh Harry, come and sit down She motions to the chair next to hers, Harry walks over and joins her at the table Is it dad? Yes Harry, I m not quite sure how to say this Mary begins to cry even more than she already is When is dad coming home? I m afraid he isn t Harry What do you mean he isn t? Why not? Dad went to sleep last night at the hospital and the doctors tried to wake him up, but they just couldn t Why couldn t they? If he s just asleep why can t they wake him up? Harrys voice begins to rise as he says this

Because they can t Harry, dads not going to wake up, dads not coming home Harry But he has to! Dad has to come home and open my presents with me! I know Harry, I m sorry, I don t know what to say I don t believe you! Harry stands up fast, throwing his chair out behind him as he does so and then storms out of the kitchen and up to his room Harry please don t Harry is already halfway up the stairs as Mary shouts this behind him, he ignores her and doesn t look back as he slams his bedroom door behind him, he then throws himself on to the bed and curls up in a ball and begins to cry Harry felt as if the whole world was crashing down on top of him right there in that moment and the weight of it was suffocating, Why would mum say such a thing? Harry thought to himself, of course dad was coming home, he was just having a check-up at the hospital harry thought, just a check-up, he ll probably be home by lunch and they ll open his birthday presents and watch cartoons together, or so young Harry thought but between you young viewers and I your humble narrator, this was very, very sadly not the case Mary comes and knocks on Harrys bedroom door

Harry? Harry can I come in please? Harry ignores her and after a few moments she opens the door and enters the room, she walks over and sits at the edge of Harrys bed Harry I m so sorry I don t believe you mum Harry stop this! You have to believe me, I don t know what else to say Just get out What? Get out! Okay Mary gets up and leaves the room, sobbing as she goes, she closes the door behind her Harry stayed in his room all day that day, watching cartoons while waiting for his dad to come home SCENE SEVEN: THE FIRST NIGHT CHARACTERS: AND THE Tick tock, tick tock, harry awoke to sound of his bedside clock, it was the middle of the night, half past one in the morning to be exact, he had fallen asleep at some point though he wasn t sure when. The cool night air was creeping in through Harrys bedroom window, he was sure it was closed earlier, perhaps his mum or dad

had opened it he thought to himself Harry gets up to close the window and then jumps back into bed, a moment later we hear a strange noise, almost like something moving around inside his wardrobe, Harry quickly hides under the duvet, the noise keeps getting louder and louder and louder until suddenly the doors of the wardrobe burst open, we see harry visibly jump under the duvet, Harry slowly peeks out from under the duvet until he can see the wardrobe, the light of the moon is shining directly onto it through his open curtains and it is completely empty apart from Harrys clothes and all the other things that are usually in Harrys wardrobe, he lays back down and goes to sleep SCENE EIGHT: THE FOLLOWING MORNING AND S GRANDMA CHARACTERS:,, ELEANOR AND THE When Harry opened his eyes it was morning and his bedside clock was tick tocking away to itself as usual and to Harrys surprise the doors of his wardrobe were closed, last Harry remembered they were wide open last night, maybe it was all a strange dream Harry thought to himself as he got out of bed Harry gets out of bed and stretches and yawns Harry thought perhaps he should have a quick look inside just to be sure Harry approaches the wardrobe carefully and grabs the handles of the doors he braces himself and flings them open, of course there is nothing out of the ordinary inside, just his clothes, some old shoes, some toys and some comic books Just a dream He laughs a little as he says this Harry laughed at how silly he had been in actually thinking there may have been someone or

something inside his wardrobe, very silly indeed Harry quickly runs downstairs excitedly at the thought that his dad is probably home by now only to find his mum and his grandma sitting in the living room, Harrys is visibly surprised to find his grandma there, we can see instantly that they have both been crying, Harrys grandma notices Harry standing there and immediately gets up, runs over to him and hugs him tightly ELEANOR Oh Harold, you poor thing She always called him Harold, even though it was his full name no one ever called him Harold apart from his grandma What s the matter grandma? ELEANOR Oh dear have you not told him Mary? Told me what? I have told him but he just doesn t believe me, I don t know what else to tell him Mary bursts into tears halfway through her sentence What are you both talking about? Harry was beginning to feel angry as he was the day before yet he wasn t sure why, he felt almost as if they were keeping something from him ELEANOR Your father Harold dear, I m so sorry

Why does everyone keep saying they re sorry? Dad will be home soon right? ELEANOR Oh Harold, I m afraid what your mother said is true, your father won t be coming home Eleanor bursts into tears as she finishes her sentence You re lying! Both of you! He is coming home of course he is! Harry quickly runs to the front door and swings it open and runs out into the street and keeps running Harry had no idea where he was going but he knew that he just wanted to be far away from everyone, from his mum and from his grandma Using the cabinet from the zoo scene with different props and a different rotating backdrop to create the effect of houses and cars passing by as Harry runs down the street, eventually Harry comes to a park, this will be wheeled in on a different table Harry had been there before, him and his mum and his dad would go there sometimes if the weather was nice and they would have a picnic and there was a set of swings that Harry would play on and see how high he could manage to go, one time he almost went all the way over, it was very scary and Harry had decided that he would not try to go that high again Harry catches his breath for a few moments then walks over and sits down on the swings Harry sat there and thought about what his mum and his grandma had said to him back at the house and although he

couldn t believe it, why would they lie about such a thing he thought, then out of the corner of his eye he spotted something or perhaps someone We see to the side of the set, perhaps behind a tree, a shadowy figure appear then disappear again after a few moments, after a long pause Harry bursts into tears Perhaps they weren t lying, Harry thought as the tears flooded down his cheeks, maybe dad wasn t coming back. Harry suddenly realised just how far he had ran from home, he wasn t even sure how long he had been sitting there on the swings, then he thought about how mean he had been to his mum and his grandma and felt very bad about the way he had spoken to them Harry gets up and walks home, when he gets there he finds that no one is there, after looking around for a few moments he goes up to his room and finds upon entering that his birthday presents are gone, Harry flies into a panic, he looks under the bed, in the little cupboard next to his bed, he stops and looks at the wardrobe, he flings the doors open only to find no presents at all in there, just the usual things but then Harry notices something different, just behind some old shoe boxes, the corner of what appears to be a door, he quickly begins removing everything from the wardrobe, the clothes, the shoes, the toys, the comics all just thrown across the room until we can clearly see the door, yet it is just an outline drawn on the back wall of the wardrobe, the shape of the door is all wrong, the corner on one side is higher than the other and the handle, a big round door knob is right in the centre and just above it is the outline of a door knocker and on the front of the knocker is a face, a bear, not the animal but more like a teddy bear Harry had no idea where this door had come from but it interested him immensely, he suddenly had the idea that perhaps he should knock on door, as silly as the idea seemed he

had the strangest feeling that there was something important on the other side Harry takes a deep breath and knocks three times on the knocker drawn on the door, he waits a moment and nothing happens, then one short sharp knock comes from what sounds like behind the wardrobe, it startles Harry so much that he falls backwards onto the pile of clothes and toys behind him, then another knock comes and then a brief moment later a third and final knock comes, each one louder than the last, Absolutely terrified Harry quickly throws everything back in the wardrobe and slams the doors closed then runs and grabs his bedside table and drags it across the room and puts it in front of the wardrobe to keep it closed, he then runs downstairs to find Mary and Eleanor coming in through the front door, he runs over and hugs Mary tightly Oh Harry thank god your safe, we were so worried Mary grabs a hold of Harry and hugs him I m sorry I ran away mum ELEANOR Where on earth did you go Harold? To the park where we go for picnics Harry suddenly began feeling terribly sad as he realised that if what they had said about dad was true then those wonderful picnics in the park would be no more young viewers, sadly Harry was beginning more and more by the second to believe what they had said, so much so that he forgot all about his presents and the strange door in his wardrobe Harry breaks down and cries in his mother s arms ELEANOR

Oh you poor, poor thing Eleanor strokes Harrys head as she says this SCENE NINE: THAT NIGHT CHARACTERS:,, ELEANOR AND THE That night they all sit down to eat dinner together in the living room, they have a takeaway pizza and they all sit there eating, no one speaking What happened to dad? How do you mean Harry? You said he went to sleep, but I don t understand if he s just asleep then why can t he come home? Well Harry you see sometimes when people aren t as young as they used to be their body gets very tired and they need to rest, for Mary pauses as she thinks how to finish her sentence For a very long time So he might come home one day? Maybe one day harry Mary begins to well up as she says this ELEANOR Oh Mary stop it! You can t lie to him like this it s not right! I have it under control, Just let me worry about Harry ELEANOR Well you can t go on telling him stories, he s already so grown

up he ll just figure it out for himself eventually Just tell me the truth! Harrys sudden angry outburst silences them both And tell him the truth they did viewers, they decided to tell him everything, they used big words that Harry couldn t understand and told him exactly what had happened to his dear old dad and although he didn t understand everything they had said, one thing was now very clear to Harry, his dad was not coming home, not any time soon, not ever As the narrator speaks Mary and Eleanor are talking to harry but we can t hear what they are saying SCENE TEN: LATER THAT NIGHT CHARACTERS: AND THE Tick tock, tick tock, Harry lay awake in bed that night listening to the sound of his bedside clock ticking away Harry glances at the clock and sees that it is midnight Harry suddenly felt very sleepy, very sleepy indeed and that he was struggling to keep his eyes open and soon he was fast asleep SCENE ELEVEN: THE FIRST DREAM CHARACTERS:, ARTHUR AND THE Harry found himself in strange surroundings, somewhere he had been once before he was sure but it was all different somehow, it was the zoo, yet not how it was in real life

The cabinet will be in use again, perhaps with a different backdrop to create a more dream like effect of the zoo and with different lighting to help differentiate it from the previous scene I must be dreaming Arthur suddenly appears beside Harry Dad! Arthur doesn t seem to hear him Dad? Harry tries to grab his dads hand yet even though he is right next to him he can t quite reach, then all of a sudden Harry starts running, as hard as he tried to stop he just can t, he tries to look back to see if his dad is still there but his head won t turn, he tries to call out to his dad but no words will come out, he just keeps running and running until eventually he comes to a stop at a large crowd of people, they are all gathered around something, Harry tries to see what it is that everyone is looking at but he can t see through all the people in the way, the same as before the crowd will enter from the side of the stage, maybe this time they could make a more dramatic entrance as we are inside Harry s own nightmare Excuse me Harry tries to push through the crowd and he pushes and pushes until eventually he catches a glimpse of what everyone is staring at, it s his dad laying down on the floor, just like before at the zoo Dad! Harry pushes against the crowd Let me through! Harry looks up and can t believe his eyes when he sees that all these people have no faces, they have hair and ears and everything else a normal person has but their faces are just blank, Harry lets out a terrified scream and suddenly everyone turns to look at harry, he falls backwards to the floor and they all leaned in arms

stretched out and take a hold of him all over and start dragging him away from his dad Dad, help me! Harry kicks and pulls against the grasp of the crowd Dad! Finally he frees himself from their grasp and runs to his dads side yet just as he is about to take a hold of Arthur the lights go out SCENE TWELVE: CHARACTERS:, AND THE Harry awoke safe and sound in his bedroom to the familiar tick tock, tick tock of the bedside clock Just a nightmare Harry rolls over and notices that his bedroom window is wide open, he gets up to close it but as he approaches the window the moon suddenly comes into view and it is enormous, much larger than usual and the light of the moon shines directly in through Harrys window illuminating everything in a blue light. Harry quickly closes the window and dives back into bed and hides under the duvet, then we hear the noise of his bedside table moving and the wardrobe doors creaking open, then silence. Harry waits a moment before peeking out from under the duvet to see that the wardrobe is wide open and all the things inside have all spilled out onto the floor and then Harry notices the door inside the wardrobe is also wide open, he quickly gets up and leaps out of bed and runs for the door so he can tell his mum what is happening but as he grasps the handle he finds it won t turn, no matter how hard he twists it in his hands it simply will not budge, Then from behind him he hears the sound, a low and heavy sigh, a sigh so raspy it could almost been the growl of some wild animal, a terrified harry slowly turns to see what it is that is standing behind him and at that moment his jaw falls open as he gazes upon just what it is sighing away, it appears to be a bear, a teddy bear to be exact, yet it is fashioned out of all of Harrys things from the wardrobe, for feet it has two big paws made of old shoes and his body and hands

and face are made from clothes and toys sticking out here and there and as he breathes we can hear the rustling of paper which is assumed to be Harry comic books somewhere inside the mass of stuff that is towering over him (perhaps use of spotlighting focusing on harry could hid things happening around the set to make the sudden appearance of the monster both easier and more effective) What are you? I child, am a monster The monsters voice is very low and rumbling, perhaps things around the room could vibrate as he speaks You don t look like a monster to me, you look more like a bear to me Harry laughs nervously as he says this I have many guises child, I simply felt that this one would be the most appeasing for you What s your name? I have gone by many names in the many years I have walked this place child, the eternal man, the night walker, the dark one, the dream bearer, but for the time being child you may simply refer to me as the monster But where did you come from? Why, I came from inside your wardrobe child I know that, but where do you come from?

I come from nowhere child, I am simply wherever I need to be, whenever I am needed, and I am needed aren t i? I don t know, are you? Of course I am child, otherwise I wouldn t be here now would I? The monster lowers himself onto Harrys bed as he says this, as he does so the bed lets out an awful cracking noise under the weight of the monster Now then child, tell me what has been troubling you I don t know what you mean, and I think your breaking my bed Of course you do child, a certain dream perhaps? What dream? We can hear the anger rising in Harrys voice You know which one I mean child, the last dream you had, you knew you were dreaming yet you could not wake up, you had no control and you had to relive that horrible moment all over again So what, it was just a nightmare You re right child, a nightmare indeed, and one you are destined to have night after night forever unless you learn to accept what you know to be true I don t know what you re talking about

Ahhh but you do child, you cannot hide it from me, if you do not accept it child the dream will slowly spill into your waking hours, it will haunt you The monster leans in toward Harry as he says this Stop it I can help you child, I can give you control over the dream, but you still have to make a choice I said stop it Harry says this as if through gritted teeth The monster pauses The lights all go out You know I am right Harry How do you know my name?! I know all child, and I know that now you must sleep for there is so much to do and so much to see all in such little time What are you talking about? Another night child, another time SCENE THIRTEEN: AND THEN THE NEXT DAY CHARACTERS:,, ELEANOR AND THE THE Harry awoke to the tick tock, tick tock of his bedside clock

ticking away, still on the floor next to his bed Harry immediately sits up and looks all around the room and we see that the window is closed as is the wardrobe and the bedside table is where he had left it blocking the doors Harry gets out of bed Just a dream THE It was then that the thought came to him just where his birthday presents may have disappeared to, in fact he was quite sure of it, the monster had taken them from him Harry quickly runs to the wardrobe, throws the table out of the way and flings the doors open, everything is still there, the clothes, the shoes, the toys, the comic books and there behind it, the door, Harry throws everything out over his shoulders as he races to get to the door, now just an outline once again, Once the wardrobe is empty harry begins pounding on the door Give them back! I know you can hear me so give them back! Harry continues pounding his fists against the door until he can t any longer, then his door opens and we see Mary standing in the door way Harry what s going on? Leave me alone! Harry! That s enough! You wouldn t understand Well you don t know until you tell me Harry

It s okay mum, I m sorry I shouted at you It s okay Harry, now come downstairs and we ll have breakfast, your grandmas already down there Okay mum I ll be down in a minute just let me put all this stuff away Okay Mary leaves and she closed the door behind her, harry immediately turns back to the door in the wardrobe I know you re in there and I know you have them, I will get them back Harry began putting the things back in his wardrobe Harry had no idea whether it was all a dream or if he was simply losing his mind, he wanted to tell his mum and grandma about the monster in his wardrobe that had stolen his birthday presents but every time he thought of it he realised just how crazy that sounded and besides that they both had enough to deal with right now, no Harry decided, he would deal with the monster himself, if he was real that is Harry goes downstairs to find his mum getting her things together to go out Where are you going mum? I m sorry Harry I have to go out for a while but your grandma is going to stay here with you

Okay I won t be too long Harry Mary kisses Harry on the forehead and then leaves through the front door after she leaves Harry goes to the kitchen and finds his grandma there Where s mum going? ELEANOR She has to go to the funeral directors What s that? ELEANOR The funeral directors are the people who are going to help us say goodbye to your father Harold, I m telling you this because you need to be grown up about this, you re the man of the house now Eleanor begins to tear up a little as she says this But I don t want to say goodbye, I m not a grown up, I m only nine ELEANOR Well you have to act grown up because when I leave your going to have to look after your mum oaky Harold? Okay grandma I guess you re right ELEANOR Anyway enough about that, what would you like to do today? I don t know ELEANOR

How about we watch some of those cartoons you like? Adventure time? ELEANOR Yes, that one, you go get it ready and I ll make a cup of tea Okay Harry runs off to the living room to put adventure time on Netflix As Harry and his grandma sat watching cartoons together that afternoon Harry found that he wasn t enjoying it as much as he usually did yet he couldn t quite figure out why, possibly because his grandma kept asking him questions about what was happening in the show or maybe it was what she had said earlier about being a grown up or it may have been that Harry and his dad would always watch it together and Harry was now realising that watching cartoons with his dad and all the other things they used to do together were now things of the past, mere memories and in time they would fade as with everything. Harry bursts into tears ELEANOR Harold what s the matter? I m fine ELEANOR Tell me what s wrong I said I m fine! PEARL Okay

After that they both sat in complete silence until Harrys mum came home, Harry realised how angry he was feeling all the time yet he didn t know why Mary comes home and she and Eleanor go into the kitchen together to talk, after a while Harry gets up and goes to the kitchen to confront them What are you talking about? Oh Harry, we re just talking about grown up stuff, go back to the living room and we ll be there in a minute okay? Well grandma said that I have to be a grown up Oh did she now? Mary turns to look at Eleanor She did and she said that you went to the funeral directors today and that they were going to make us say goodbye to dad Is this true? ELEANOR Well yes it is but it s true isn t it? You can t just lie to him he has to know what s going on after all he was his father Well he was my husband! ELEANOR And he was my son! Stop it! They are both silenced by Harrys sudden outburst

I m sorry harry ELEANOR Me too Harold Even with the argument over Harry still felt angry, like it was consuming him from the inside out, he didn t even know what to say to them both, he tied to think but no words would form in his mind Harry quickly runs from the kitchen and up to his room, he throws himself onto the bed and we can already hear his mum and grandma arguing in the kitchen downstairs again ELEANOR Its tearing him apart Mary you have to make him understand what s going on! He s my son and how I help him deal with this is my problem not yours! Harry felt the urge to go and tell them to stop arguing again but he simply didn t have the strength to get back out of bed, he felt drained, exhausted and suddenly extremely sleepy SCENE FOURTEEN: SECOND ENCOUNTER WITH CHARACTERS:, AND THE Harry must have fallen asleep at some point for when he next opened his eyes to the tick tock, tick tock of his bedside clock it was half past one in the morning, the window was open once again and the cold night air was making the hairs on his arms stand on end

Harry gets out of bed and approaches the wardrobe, he grabs the bedside table and drags it out of the way of the doors and then just stands there and waits, Harry waits a while yet nothing happens, he becomes frustrated and grabs the handles of the wardrobe doors and flings them open wide and to find that there is nothing there, just a pile of his belongings as usual, no monster, no presents still yet the door is still there Harry knew that the monster was in there and more than that, he knew that the monster had taken Harrys presents and he was determined to get them back Harry quickly starts throwing everything out of the wardrobe onto the floor behind him, when it is empty harry reaches out to knock on the door and then before our very eyes the knob in the middle of the door transforms from a mere drawing on the back of his wardrobe into something real Harry couldn t believe his eyes and he also couldn t stop his hand from reaching out to touch it no matter how terrified he was Harry grabs the old, rusty door knob in his hand and turns it and to Harrys utter surprise the door swings open, inwards with a gust of wind blowing in from the open window, inside there is nothing but darkness No matter how hard he tried Harry couldn t see a thing and then he heard a voice THE VOICE Come away o human child to the end of the world, with a monster hand in hand The ghostly voice echoed from deep inside the emptiness that stood before Harry Harry quickly slams the wardrobe doors closed and runs and dives under his duvet

Go to sleep, It s just a dream, just a bad dream Harry hears the sounds of something dragging itself out of his wardrobe and out onto the floor, we can hear the familiar sigh of the monster he had met the night before followed by the rustling of paper Just a dream, just a dream, just a dream All of a sudden the duvet is whipped off of Harry leaving him exposed to whatever terror has climbed out of his wardrobe Open your eyes child Harry peers up at the monster towering over his bed Are you afraid of me child? Harry quickly sits up, angry at the monster Where are my presents? I think you already know the answer to that question child Well give them back to me That I can do child, but on one condition only The monster said lowers himself onto the end of Harrys bed, the end immediately collapsing under the sheer weight of him Harry crosses his arms What condition? And you ve broken my bed again

My only condition child, is that you open them The monster raises his eyebrows I don t want to open them Oh but you must child I can t And why can t you open them? I just can t! But why?! I can t open them without dad! But he isn t coming child How do you know that? You know it as well as I do child and the sooner you accept it the better, it will tear you apart, in fact it already has begun to I don t know what you re talking about But you do child and it will grow and grow, worse and worse until it consumes you, you have to make a choice child Fine let me make the choice Not yet child, all in good time

But you just said that I have to And you will child, when you are good and ready, yet for now you must sleep But I m not tired The monster reaches out a huge paw to touch Harrys face, then all of a sudden he feels very tired, his eyelids feel so heavy he can no longer keep them open Now young viewers, we re nearly there, the end of the tunnel and there is the slightest glimmer of light but we must not rush now for although we are very close we could still oh so easily lose our way SCENE FIFTEEN: AND THENTHE DAY AFTER THE NEXT DAY CHARACTERS:,, ELEANOR AND THE Tick tock, tick tock, Harry awoke to the sound of bedside clock ticking away, he quickly sat up and looked around the room to find that once again the window was closed as was the wardrobe, all of his belongings safely back inside, even the bedside table had been put back in front of the doors, This time however Harry was under no illusion that it had all been a dream, he was absolutely positive that he had in fact been visited by a monster in the night and the first thing he planned to was tell his mum and grandma, no matter how ridiculous it sounded Harry gets out of bed and runs downstairs ready as ever to tell his mum and grandma about the monster when he finds them both in the kitchen talking about his dad

Harry noticed something different, they weren t crying like they usually were, they seemed to be laughing, they were talking about all the things Harrys dad used to do, little things like how he always had to have two and a half sugars in his coffee or how he would only ever own one pair of trainers at a time and he would wear them until they were practically falling apart before buying a new pair, usually a pair of the exact same ones, They both seemed so happy in that moment right there that harry decided that he didn t want to ruin it for them and besides it had been a while since he had seen his dear old mum smile that it even awoke a sort of happiness within Harry, no he thought, maybe later I can tell them SCENE SIXTEEN: LATER IN THE DAY AFTER THE NEXT DAY CHARACTERS:,, ELEANOR AND THE Yet tell them later he did not young viewers, for the spirits were flying so high in the Ellsworth household that day that Harry just couldn t bring himself to ruin the mood for everyone by reminding them of the tragedy that had befallen them all by mentioning the monster or even worse that, that his presents had been stolen, The day flew by rather quickly as they all had lunch together and then Harrys mum and grandma went out in the garden together to give it a good tidy up, the weather being quite nice out, Harry helped them here and there but he didn t really enjoy gardening as it usually meant getting his hands all dirty and the grass and plants always made

him all itchy by the end of the day, That night Harrys mum decided that they should have a take away for dinner, a Chinese take away and that harry was allowed to order whatever he wanted, Harry simply lit up at the thought of this as he loved having a Chinese take away, him and his dad would always, and then Harry realised that this would be the first time without dad there, Harry lost his appetite as quickly as it had come Perhaps the puppets could be acting out the scenes the narrator describes as he is talking right up until he finishes and further dialogue from the other characters commence What would you like Harry? I don t mind, I ll just have whatever everyone else is having Are you sure Harry? Yeah it s okay I m not very hungry anyway, I ll just be in my room until it gets here Oh, okay well I ll call you down when it s here Harry Harry leaves the room adding nothing else to the conversation and goes up to his room, Harry lays on his bed in silence, just staring at the ceiling listening to the tick tock, tick tock of his bedside clock Tonight, Harry thought to himself, tonight is the night I get my presents back and finally get rid of the monster A little while later Harry hears his mum calling up to him from the bottom of the stairs that the food has

arrived, Harry slowly makes his way downstairs for dinner, Harry picks his way through dinner, doing his very best to make it look as if he is enjoying it, though he really isn t hungry, they eat in the living room and the high spirits of earlier in the day have faded and his mum and grandma barely speak all through dinner, if not for the television in the background the room would near enough silent, Around half past nine harry tells his mum and grandma that he is feeling very tired and that he is going to go to bed, Harry goes back up to his room Of course harry wasn t tired in the slightest, he just wanted to be prepared for what he planned to be his final encounter with the monster Before climbing into bed Harry moves his bedside table back to where it belongs next to his bed Then Harry realised something, half past one, the monster always came at half past one in the morning, Harry quickly set an alarm on his clock for twenty five past one, he then lay down and closed his eyes The lights all go down then after a long pause they come back on but not all the way on Harry must have been a little more tired than he had thought for when he awoke again it was not to the familiar tick tock, tick tock of his bedside clock but rather the beep beep beep of the clocks alarm Harry quickly silences the alarm hoping that it isn t loud enough to wake his mum or his grandma up and then he hears the sound of the wind howling outside, all of a sudden the wind forces his window open and comes howling into his room, bringing the cold night air in with it, The wind is blowing hard in Harrys face as he gets up and tried to close the window, when he looks outside he sees the moon hanging low over his garden, full and almost blindingly bright, With the window closed harry begins to approach the wardrobe, the bedside clock tick tocking

away behind him, Harry must have stared out at that enormous moon a few moments longer than he had thought for as he reaches out to grab the handles of the door we can already hear the familiar sigh of the monster inside now about to emerge, Harry quickly flings the doors open wide and there he is, the monster, Harry takes a few steps back as the monster clambers out of the wardrobe into the room Good evening child, I see you were up before my arrival this night Enough talking, just give me back what belongs to me All in good time child, all in good time, first however you must make the choice I m ready Are you sure child? For once the dream starts there is no stopping it, you must make your choice I said I m ready! If you say so child The monster claps his hands together and Harrys room disappears before his very eyes, replaced by nothing, just empty darkness, Then there is light, white and clear, yet when it becomes clear he knows exactly where he is, the zoo, The zoo is filled with people just as it was that day and just as it was in Harrys dream, yet no one is moving, it is as if time has frozen them in their place Are you ready child? I think so

You must decide child, are you going to hold on forever and lose touch with everything and everyone else or are you ready to move on and embrace the new future that stands before you I know what I m going to do Then brace yourself child for in a few moments you will be beyond the help of me or anyone else, the only one who will be able to help you will be yourself As the monster finishes speaking the zoo comes to life, all the people begin walking back and forth, the familiar sounds of the animals the background as he starts walking, searching for his dad, It doesn t take long for Harry to find him walking along on his own yet it seems as Harry gets closer to him the further away his dad becomes until Harry is running, sprinting to keep up with him until he disappears completely The scene was becoming all too familiar to Harry as he kept running towards what he knew he was about to see yet he didn t stop running, not because he couldn t but because he didn t want to, I want this to be over Harry thought to himself as he ran and ran and ran Eventually Harry comes to a stop behind the crowd, the faceless mass of people gathering around his father laying face down on the floor, Harry pushes through as best he can yet the closer he gets the thicker the crowd gets until he can go no further, the cabinet used for the previous dream sequence will be used again in this scene Let me through! They all at the exact same moment let out a surprised shriek at the young boy shouting up at them from the floor, Harry uses this distraction to make his final push through the crowd, landing on top of his father, Immediately the crowd moves in, arms stretched out towards harry, ready to drag him away again

No! They simply ignore his feeble attempt and take a hold of him, yet he has a firm grip on his father and no matter how hard they try to drag him away he will not let go of him, Harry glances up to see the monster standing idly by watching the scene unfold Help me! I cannot help you child, you must help yourself, you cannot take him with you But why?! Because he is already gone child, this is simply a memory of him No it s not, he s alive In you he is yes child, but to the rest of your family, to the rest of the world he is not, he is no longer, now let go child or forever be here stuck in this place child Harry knew deep down that the monster was right he also knew that he wasn t ready to let go of his dad, not just in the dream but in life as well The clock is ticking child, make your choice Harry could hear the tick tock, tick tock of his bedside clock echoing all around him deafeningly loud Now child!

I love you dad Harry whispers this to Arthur and at that he closes his eyes and simply lets go, when he opens them again his father is so far in the distance Harry can barely see him, as he looks around the zoo has also disappeared and Harry is completely surrounded by white, then dark and then nothing SCENE SEVENTEEN: THE FINAL MORNING CHARACTERS: AND THE Tick tock, tick tock harry awoke to the sound of his bedside clock ticking away, the time was half past seven in the morning Harry sits up immediately and looks around the room to find everything as normal, He quickly gets out of bed and runs to the wardrobe and opens the doors to find that not only has the door completely disappeared but that in its place as promised, are Harrys birthday presents, Harry scoops them up and takes them over to his bed and places them down, he sits down next to them and then picks one up and examines it, he lifts the label and reads it to harry, lots of love, dad. Harry picks the rest up from the bed and goes to go downstairs with them, stopping at the wardrobe on his way Thank you We can hear the genuine happiness in Harrys voice as he says this, then harry leaves the room with presents in hand and closes the door behind him, the lights go out
