I was born on the same day as India got its freedom. I have always celebrated my birthday with my friends and members of the family. All of us get together in the big room of my house, and then in the evening we cut a cake and we dance. 2. Last year I turned 21. As usual we decorated the living room of my house. In the evening we gathered together and I cut a birthday cake. Suddenly my uncle, who seldom visited us entered the house. He showered blessings on me and joined us in the celebration of my birthday. 3. To our surprise, he suddenly stopped the music and stood in the middle of the room. He then made an impassioned speech that I can never forget all my life. He said, My dear little ones, as we know, Rohit is 21. This means he is an adult now. Can any of you tell me the real meaning of being an adult? 4. There was pin - drop silence in the room. Let me tell you the responsibilities of an adult. At first a young boy tries to understand the problems of his own house. He looks with extra care whether his family is as fit as a fiddle. If he feels that any member of his family is suffering from any problem then it is his duty to solve his or her problem. So he provides support for his family. Now Rohit has arrived at a stage where he will see many domestic problems, which he has to come in grip with. It can be a turning point in his life if he learns that the real art of living is to make sacrifices for others. After solving the problems of his own family, he should try to solve the problems of his own town, then his country, and his ultimate goal should be the progress and the well being of the entire human race. So he should be ready for any sacrifice. I hope that you don t mind my saying that this should be the last time that Rohit s birthday should be celebrated in this manner. Now he should celebrate his birthday only on the day he feels that there is not a single poor or miserable person in the world. Let nobody die of hunger, disease, want or neglect. 5. I felt upset at his remarks. I thought that it was easy to say something big about improving the life of others but it was a difficult task to actually take conclusive steps. Page 4 of 10

5 6. I was keen to ask my uncle about his own contribution for the enhancement of the society. But before I could ask him, my father told me that my uncle had come to our town to donate his own house to be used as an orphanage for orphans to live in. My father told me that he had also signed a paper with the government that he would like to donate his eyes, kidneys, etc. after his death. 7. After staying for a short span of time, my uncle went out of the house without even drinking a glass of water and vanished into the darkness. My heart has still not ceased praising him.
